Texas Senate Nominee James Talarico Under Fire for Twisting Scripture to Defend Abortion, Gender Ideology, and Critical Race Theory

Texas State Rep. James Talarico (D), who recently won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, is facing sharp criticism from Christian commentators for three positions they say contradict biblical teaching.

Joshua Arnold, senior writer at The Washington Stand, published an article in The Christian Post on March 9, 2026, examining what he calls Talarico's "problematic positions" on abortion, gender, and racism.

On abortion, Talarico appeared on Joe Rogan's podcast in July 2025, claiming that the Gospel of Luke shows God values "consent" in creation. He argued that before the Virgin Mary became pregnant, the angel Gabriel asked her permission. Arnold disputes this reading, noting that the angel announced God's plan rather than requesting Mary's agreement.

The angel never asks Mary for permission. He announces what God is going to do.

Arnold also pointed out that the same chapter of Luke contains one of the strongest pro life passages in Scripture, where the unborn John the Baptist leaped in the womb at the presence of the unborn Jesus.

On gender, Talarico claimed in October 2021 that God is "non binary," citing Hebrew grammatical gender in Genesis. Arnold responded that grammatical features of ancient languages do not determine theological meaning, and that Genesis 1:27 clearly establishes male and female as part of God's design.

On race, Talarico tweeted after the death of Ahmaud Arbery in 2020 that white Americans spread "the virus of racism" regardless of personal intent. Arnold contends this reflects critical race theory, which assigns collective guilt based on ethnicity rather than judging individuals by their actions.

Arnold concluded that Talarico's positions align more closely with Democratic Party orthodoxy than with historic Christian teaching, suggesting his theological beliefs follow his political commitments rather than the other way around.

Talarico, who is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, has made his faith a central part of his political identity. He has gone viral multiple times for sermons and media appearances where he uses Scripture to defend progressive positions on social issues.

During his appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast, Rogan told Talarico he "needs to run for president," a moment that propelled the Texas lawmaker into the national spotlight.

Talarico defeated U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the March 2026 Democratic primary and will face either Sen. John Cornyn or Attorney General Ken Paxton in the general election.

The Crusader's Opinion

A man who twists the Word of God to justify killing unborn children, denying the Creator's design of male and female, and smearing an entire race with collective guilt is not a bold theologian. He is a wolf in sheep's clothing. The Bible is not a buffet where you pick the verses that win elections and leave the rest on the table. Scripture is clear: life begins in the womb, God made them male and female, and every soul is judged by their own actions, not by their skin color. Christians in Texas and across this nation need to see through the smooth words and recognize what is actually being sold here: the Democratic Party platform dressed up in a clerical collar.
