University of North Texas Launches New Bachelor's Degree in Artificial Intelligence Starting Fall 2026

The University of North Texas (UNT) Board of Regents has approved a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence program set to begin in fall 2026, making UNT one of the first universities in Texas to offer a dedicated undergraduate AI major.

David M. Keathly, associate chair for undergraduate studies and director of operations in UNT's Computer Science and Engineering Department, is leading the initiative. Keathly emphasized the importance of building strong foundational skills before diving into AI specializations.

"Students need a good basis in fundamental computing concepts."

The curriculum begins with foundational computing courses covering critical thinking, problem solving, and computational and algorithmic thinking. Students will then progress to specialized AI coursework including machine learning, natural language processing, large language models, and deep learning through applied courses.

The program culminates in a two semester capstone project with industry sponsored partnerships, along with dedicated coursework in ethics and the societal impact of technology.

According to data presented to the UNT Board of Regents, the Dallas Fort Worth metropolitan area sees approximately 2,000 monthly AI related job postings, with median first year salaries ranging from $68,000 to $105,000.

Keathly noted that despite the hype surrounding artificial intelligence, companies continue to maintain a "human in the loop" approach, as AI cannot yet comprehensively handle system design and testing responsibilities on its own.

UNT joins three other Texas universities already offering AI degrees: the University of Texas at El Paso, Angelo State University, and Tarleton State University. The growing availability of AI programs across the state reflects the surging demand for skilled professionals in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The Crusader's Opinion

It is encouraging to see a major Texas university equip the next generation with real skills in one of the most consequential fields of our time. Christians must not be asleep at the wheel when it comes to artificial intelligence. This technology will shape how our children learn, how churches communicate, and how truth itself is filtered to the public. We need believers in these classrooms, in these labs, and in these boardrooms. If the people building tomorrow's AI have no fear of God, do not be surprised when the systems they create reflect that void. Get involved. Get educated. The stakes are eternal.
