Charleston Southern University Pastor Jon Davis Dead at 58 After Five Year Battle With Brain Cancer
Rev. Jonathan "Jon" D. Davis, the beloved associate vice president for spiritual life at Charleston Southern University and pastor of Summit Church Charleston, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2026, after a courageous five year battle with Stage 4 glioblastoma multiforme. He was 58 years old.
Davis had been married to his wife Lynette for 38 years and is survived by their four children and three grandchildren. He was first diagnosed with the aggressive brain cancer in June 2021 and continued serving in ministry throughout his treatment at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.
His 35 year journey at Charleston Southern began in 1991 when he was appointed assistant football coach. He left coaching in 1999 to pursue full time ministry as pastor of Summit Church in North Charleston, a position he held until his death.
Davis returned to CSU in 2004 as assistant campus pastor, became campus pastor in 2011, and was named assistant dean of students and director of the Whitfield Center for Christian Leadership in 2018. In 2019, he was elevated to associate vice president for spiritual life while also serving as adjunct professor in the College of Christian Studies.
He earned a Master of Theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and was pursuing a doctorate at the time of his passing.
Your engaging now with the Lord is going to change your life forever... Jesus will be more valued to you than the cash flow you get from the job.
Davis spoke those words in October 2021, shortly after his diagnosis, reflecting the unwavering faith that defined his life and ministry.
His life verse was Psalm 71:18: "Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation."
Memorial services were held on March 13 in Salisbury, North Carolina, and a celebration of life took place on March 14 at Charleston Southern University.
Pastor Jon Davis Leaves Behind Legacy of Faith at Charleston Southern University

A wave of public condolences continues to pour across social media as students, alumni, and colleagues remember the man who shaped the spiritual life of an entire university for more than two decades. Davis touched thousands of lives through his dual role as campus spiritual leader and local church pastor.
The Crusader's Opinion
Pastor Jon Davis spent five years staring down a death sentence and never once stopped preaching the Gospel. That is what real faith looks like. Not the comfortable, Sunday morning kind that disappears when the diagnosis comes in. The kind that stands at the podium with a brain tumor and tells students that Jesus is worth more than anything this world can offer. The Church lost a warrior. Heaven gained one. May we all have the courage to declare God's power to the next generation the way Jon Davis did, right up until his final breath.
