Churches in Wales Generate 250 Million Pounds a Year and the Government Cannot Keep Up
Welsh faith communities deliver 250 million pounds annually in social action, outspending the governments entire social justice budget according to a landmark new report.
Welsh Faith Communities Contribute £250 Million Annually Through Social Action and Volunteer Work
Faith communities across Wales are generating at least £250 million annually for the Welsh economy through social action, according to the 2025 Faith in Wales report published by Evangelical Alliance Wales. The landmark study, launched at a special event at the Senedd in Cardiff, represents the first comprehensive update in 17 years on the contribution of faith groups to Welsh society.
The report reveals a 49% increase in real terms since the original 2008 study. The economic breakdown includes £115.1 million from volunteer hours, £79.2 million in staff salaries, £17.6 million in free community space, and £38.6 million from discounted premises rental. Remarkably, this total exceeds the Welsh Government's own £159 million social justice budget.
The survey of 201 faith communities found that 97% run at least one community focused initiative. Over half (52%) provide food assistance, while 29% support homeless populations. Services extend to debt advice, youth work, mental health initiatives, and refugee outreach.
The report demonstrates "their continued important and positive contribution to society" while also containing "a challenge regarding how faith communities could be better supported." Rev Canon Tim Rowlands, Head of Evangelical Alliance Wales
The launch event was attended by Jane Hutt, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Trefnydd and Chief Whip for the Welsh Government. The findings show that 77% of surveyed communities own their worship spaces, 89% offer disability accessible facilities, and more than 50% offer free or discounted space for community groups and public bodies.
In terms of civic engagement, 21% of faith communities participate in government consultations, while 34% engage in election hustings or have members serving in public office. However, 39% of faith leaders expressed a desire for deeper engagement with policymakers, and 77% wish to launch new initiatives, particularly in mental health and addiction support.
How Churches in Wales Are Quietly Powering the Economy With £250 Million in Community Service

The report highlights that faith participation is strongly linked to improved mental wellbeing and increased resilience. Churches often serve as an early point of contact for those struggling with mental health challenges, providing pastoral care, group activities, and environments of belonging. This is particularly significant at a time when the NHS in Wales spends more than £1 billion annually on mental health services.
Funding barriers and complex grant applications remain the primary obstacles preventing faith communities from expanding their work. Over a quarter (26%) of faith communities operate listed or conservation buildings, adding to the financial burden of maintaining vital community infrastructure.
The Crusader's Opinion
Here is proof, plain as day, that the Church is the backbone of Western civilization. While governments throw billions at bureaucracies and still cannot solve poverty or loneliness, 201 churches in Wales alone are outspending the entire Welsh social justice budget. Let that sink in. Volunteers, pastors, and ordinary believers are doing what no government program ever could: feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and healing the broken. And what do they get in return? Complex grant applications and bureaucratic walls. The West needs to wake up. Stop sidelining the very communities that hold society together. Every pound the Church generates is a pound that secular institutions failed to deliver. Christendom built this civilization, and it is still carrying it on its back.
