250,000 Babies a Year: UK Public Demands Heartbeat Law as 62% Say Protect the Unborn

62% of Britons polled say unborn babies with a heartbeat deserve legal protection as CBR UK backs parliamentary Heartbeat Bill petition.

A major street poll conducted across the United Kingdom has revealed that a clear majority of the British public supports legal protection for unborn babies once a heartbeat is detected.

The Centre for Bio Ethical Reform UK (CBR UK) released findings from its "Heartbeat Campaign," which surveyed over 2,800 individuals across more than a dozen towns and cities between March and May 2025.

In the first poll, 1,546 respondents were asked: "If a baby has a heartbeat, should their life be protected?" A decisive 62% answered yes.

A second poll of 1,328 people posed the question: "If a baby in the womb has a heartbeat, aside from extreme circumstances, should the law allow us to kill them?" In response, 59% said no, indicating strong opposition to abortion once a heartbeat can be detected.

The group believes public opinion demonstrates growing support for stronger legal protections for the unborn.

Ruth Rawlins, CBR UK spokesperson, said in a statement.

CBR UK asserts that a baby's heart begins beating just 22 days after fertilization and argues that heartbeat detection should carry legal significance as an indicator of life.

The organization notes that over 250,000 abortions occur annually in the UK, with many taking place after a heartbeat becomes detectable.

The campaign is now backing a parliamentary petition calling for a "Heartbeat Bill" that would protect babies in the womb once a heartbeat is identified. The petition is currently live on the UK Parliament website.

The UK Government has not indicated any plans to introduce such legislation, which would represent a significant change to existing abortion law in England and Wales.

The Heartbeat Bill campaign enters an already polarized national conversation around abortion law, with Parliament continuing to debate possible reforms. Any proposal to introduce a heartbeat based legal threshold would represent a significant shift in existing legislation.

The petition requires 100,000 signatures to trigger a parliamentary debate. CBR UK is urging supporters to sign and share widely to push the bill into formal consideration.

The Crusader's Opinion

Every single year, the United Kingdom quietly ends the lives of over 250,000 unborn children. That is a quarter of a million beating hearts silenced before they ever draw a breath. And when 62% of everyday Britons say these lives deserve protection, Parliament pretends not to hear.

The hypocrisy is staggering. The same government that passes laws to protect hedgehogs, bats, and badger setts cannot find the moral courage to protect a child with a beating heart. This is not a complicated question. A heartbeat means life. Ending that life means killing. No amount of legal euphemism changes what this is.

Sign the petition. Share it with everyone you know. Make your MP answer the question directly: "If a baby has a heartbeat, should we be allowed to kill them?" Force them to say it out loud.
