The Welsh Bible is experiencing a digital renaissance, with new apps, audio recordings, and online platforms bringing Scripture to Welsh speakers around the globe in ways never before possible.
The journey of the Welsh Bible spans centuries. In the sixth century, under St David, the Bible existed only in Latin within monasteries. Queen Elizabeth I mandated its translation into Welsh in 1563, and the complete Welsh Bible appeared in 1588, chained in parish churches across Wales.
A modern translation, Y Beibl Cymraeg Newydd, launched in 1988, four hundred years later, and was revised in 2004 as the current standard edition.
The charity Gobaith i Gymru (Hope for Wales) created a colloquial Welsh translation from the original Greek and Hebrew, targeting young people and new learners. The New Testament launched online in 2002 on a website called beibl.net, followed by the Old Testament in 2013. Print publication came in 2015, making it among the first Bible translations published online first globally.
A mobile app called "ap Beibl" launched at the 2015 Eisteddfod, using a Welsh language pun since "ap" means both "app" and "son of" in Welsh.
There are now so many Welsh items on YouVersion that it is the language with the second highest number of items; only English has more.
Beginning in 2017, historic Welsh translations were catalogued and digitised, expanding the app's content from three to approximately forty items. The YouVersion Bible app, the world's most downloaded Bible app, now features extensive Welsh content, reflecting Wales's deep Christian heritage.
Multiple audio recordings now synchronize with text, including versions with different Welsh accents. The Church in Wales launched its Llithiadur Digidol (Digital Lectionary) in November 2024, providing calendar driven biblical readings accessible via web and smartphone apps.
