Sweden Refuses to Return Christian Children Seized Over Church Attendance and Parenting Choices

The European Court of Human Rights has dealt a devastating blow to Christian parents Daniel and Bianca Samson, ruling their case against Sweden inadmissible on March 10, 2026. The decision means the couple's two eldest daughters, Sara and Tiana, will remain separated from their family for what has now stretched to over three years.

The nightmare began in December 2022 when Swedish child protection services seized the Samson daughters after the eldest made a complaint at school that her parents would not allow her to have a mobile phone or wear makeup. She later retracted the accusation entirely, and prosecutors found zero evidence of abuse.

Despite the retraction, Swedish authorities refused to return the children. The state's lawyer justified the continued separation by labeling the family's regular church attendance, three times per week, as "religious extremism." The parents' limits on phone use and certain clothing were also cited as grounds for keeping the children in state custody.

Parents have the primary responsibility and right to raise their children. When the state interferes with family life based on values based parenting choices or discrimination on the basis of faith, fundamental freedoms are at stake.

Guillermo A. Morales Sancho, Legal Counsel for ADF International, who represents the Samsons, made the statement in response to the court's decision.

The ECHR declared the case inadmissible on the grounds that all domestic legal remedies in Sweden had not yet been exhausted. The court suggested that religious freedom claims could be raised before Swedish national courts, an option ADF International says the family may now pursue.

We deeply regret the court's decision to reject this case, considering that this family has been torn apart for over three years despite a full investigation that cleared Mr. and Mrs. Samson of any abuse and the fact that the social services certified their capacity and fitness for parenting after they successfully completed an official training.

Sara and Tiana remain in separate foster homes, far from each other and their parents. The Samsons are permitted only one supervised visit per month. Reports indicate the girls' physical and mental health has deteriorated in foster care, and both daughters have repeatedly expressed their wish to return home.

European Court Rejects Swedish Christian Family's Plea to Reunite with Daughters Taken Over Faith

Social services in Sweden had certified Daniel and Bianca Samson's capacity and fitness for parenting after they successfully completed official training. Yet the state continues to hold their daughters. The decision of inadmissibility is final and cannot be appealed at the European level.

Families should be free to live according to their convictions without fear of losing their children to the state.

ADF International's Morales Sancho emphasized this point as the organization considers the next steps for the Samson family's legal battle in Swedish courts.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let this sink in. A Christian family in Sweden had their children ripped away because they went to church three times a week and said no to makeup for their young daughters. The eldest child retracted her complaint. Prosecutors found nothing. Social services certified the parents as fit. And still, three years later, those little girls sit in separate foster homes, their health declining, crying to go home.

This is what state tyranny looks like when it turns its guns on the faithful. Sweden branded regular church attendance as "religious extremism." Ask yourself: would a Muslim family attending mosque five times daily face the same accusation? Would the state dare call that extremism? We all know the answer.

Going to church is not a crime. Raising your children with Christian values is not abuse. Every government official who has kept this family apart will answer for what they have done, if not in a courtroom, then before the throne of God.
