UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Tells 300 Church Leaders That Churches Are "Irreplaceable" in British Communities
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered a welcome message to approximately 300 delegates at the ChurchWorks Summit, a one day faith and policy event held at Central Hall Westminster in London on February 27, 2026.
In his address, Starmer declared that churches "play an irreplaceable role at the heart of our communities," praising congregations for their ongoing contributions to British society.
"Reaching out to those in need, offering practical support and spiritual guidance, and helping to build bridges where there are divides."
The Prime Minister affirmed that his government remains "firmly committed to working in partnership with church leaders and congregations" across the United Kingdom.
The summit brought together senior church leaders, government ministers, public sector representatives, and charity leaders to explore how faith and policy can contribute to social good. The event was co hosted by author Justin Brierley and broadcaster Swarzy Shire.
Discussions at the summit covered faith in public life, the mental health crisis, poverty alleviation, and support for vulnerable children. Miatta Fahnbulleh, Minister for Devolution, Faith and Communities, noted that service forms "a core part of their identity" for many Christians.

The event yielded several concrete outcomes, including the launch of Best Start Family Hubs collaboration, church involvement in the government's Child Poverty Strategy, and the appointment of the first Strategic Faith Lead at the National Academy of Social Prescribing.
Bishop Mike Royal, General Secretary of Churches Together in England, emphasized the importance of genuine integration, stating:
"We need to find ways to live together and not just live parallel lives."
The ChurchWorks Commission originally formed during the COVID 19 pandemic as a network of over 1,000 churches supporting community vaccination drives and food distribution efforts. It has since expanded into a broader platform for church and government collaboration.
The Crusader's Opinion
It is encouraging to hear a British Prime Minister publicly acknowledge what every Christian already knows: the Church is the backbone of communities across this nation. But words without action are hollow. The same government that praises churches with one hand has presided over policies that undermine Christian values with the other. If Starmer truly believes churches are "irreplaceable," then his government must prove it by protecting religious liberty, defending the right of Christians to live and speak according to their convictions, and ending the creeping secularism that treats faith as a quaint relic rather than the foundation of Western civilization. We will hold him to his word.
