John Piper Faces Massive Backlash After Quoting Leviticus on Immigration: Pastors and Leaders Call It 'Irresponsible Theology'

Reformed Baptist theologian John Piper, 80, sparked a firestorm on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday after posting a verse from Leviticus 19:34 about welcoming strangers, which critics widely interpreted as a veiled commentary on U.S. immigration policy.

Piper wrote: "You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God." He added: "Christians know the miserable bondage we were all in."

The post has drawn over 1 million views and overwhelmingly negative responses from prominent Christian leaders and commentators.

Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills was among the first to respond. He clarified that foreigners in ancient Israel were expected to fully assimilate to the religion and laws of the nation.

The foreigner who came among the children of Israel, were to be accepted in as converts, and not to be mistreated, but to be treated as brothers, even though they were immigrant foreigners. It was their faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that was the criteria.

Dale Partridge, pastor of King's Way Church, called Piper's post "irresponsible theology," noting that Israel never allowed foreigners to "overtake the existing population" or "replace the Jewish people."

Katy Faust of the organization Them Before Us stressed that foreigners in the Torah were "expected to respect and abide by the laws of Israel."

William Wolfe, Executive Director of the Center for Baptist Leadership, accused Piper of quoting "a very specific verse that is the favorite of the Woke Immigration Theonomists" at a politically charged moment. He added: "Even if he hadn't added commentary, we all know what he is doing."

Evangelist Sean Feucht was more blunt, calling Piper "unbelievably WOKE" for "weaponizing scripture to justify the illegal invasion."

The backlash underscores a deepening divide among evangelical Christians over how ancient biblical commands about hospitality should apply to modern immigration enforcement. Multiple respondents pointed out that the biblical concept of welcoming the stranger came with clear expectations of conversion, assimilation, and obedience to the law of the land.

Piper's post came at a time when debate about immigration enforcement in America is at an all time high, making the timing and perceived implications of the verse even more contentious among his followers.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let me be clear: loving your neighbor and defending your nation are not contradictions. The Bible John Piper quotes from also commands nations to have laws, borders, and order. Ancient Israel did not have open borders. They had the strictest immigration policy in the ancient world: worship our God, follow our laws, or stay out. What Piper did was rip a verse from its context and drop it into a modern political debate without the courage to say what he actually meant. That is not theology. That is cowardice dressed in scripture. If you want to debate immigration policy, debate it honestly. Do not hide behind Leviticus while ignoring the rest of what Leviticus demands.
