EU's 'My Voice My Choice' Abortion Scheme Faces Fierce Opposition From Christian Legal Warriors
Christian legal group ECLJ urges EU Commission to reject cross border abortion funding scheme before critical February 25 decision on My Voice My Choice.
EU Cross Border Abortion Scheme Challenged by Christian Legal Group Before Key Commission Decision
The European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ) is urging the European Commission to reject the "My Voice My Choice" initiative, a proposal that would create an EU funded mechanism allowing women to travel across member states to obtain abortions.
ECLJ Director Grégor Puppinck sent a formal letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and all 27 European Commissioners, warning that the initiative would undermine national sovereignty over abortion laws.
The initiative collected over 1.1 million verified signatures and passed a European Parliament vote on December 17, 2025, with 358 in favor, 202 against, and 79 abstentions. The European Commission is set to announce its decision on February 25, 2026.
The initiative would "place Union financial instruments at the service of facilitating access to abortion, including through measures that risk circumventing national legislative frameworks."
Puppinck outlined five key reasons for rejecting the proposal: the limits of EU competence and the principle of subsidiarity in matters relating to abortion; the absence of a recognized right to abortion under European and international human rights law; institutional impartiality concerns; the medical, psychological, and social implications of abortion for women; and inconsistent treatment of competing citizens' initiatives.
The ECLJ specifically highlighted concerning scenarios that would arise under the proposal. French women could access later term abortions in the Netherlands beyond France's legal limits. Polish women could obtain abortions for Down syndrome diagnoses in other EU countries where such procedures are permitted.
Over 170 civil society organizations from all 27 EU member states support the initiative, claiming it would "save lives, reduce suffering." The ECLJ contends the measure represents an unprecedented overreach of EU authority into matters that belong to individual member states.
Christian Legal Advocates Push Back Against EU Funded Abortion Travel Proposal

The decision by the European Commission carries enormous weight. If approved, the mechanism would establish a precedent for EU funding to directly support cross border abortion access, potentially rendering the pro life laws of nations like Poland, Malta, and Hungary ineffective in practice.
Puppinck and the ECLJ have a track record of defending life and religious freedom at the European Court of Human Rights and other international institutions. Their intervention comes at a critical moment, just days before the Commission's deadline.
The Crusader's Opinion
Let us call this what it is: the European Union is attempting to use taxpayer money to fund the killing of unborn children across national borders. They dress it up in the language of "choice" and "rights," but there is no right to end an innocent life in any authentic human rights tradition. The ECLJ is right to fight this with everything they have. When a nation like Poland stands up to protect the unborn, the EU should not be scheming to help its citizens circumvent those protections. If the Commission approves this, it will be the moment Brussels declared war on the sovereignty of every pro life nation in Europe. Every Christian in Europe should be paying attention to what happens on February 25th.
