Bible Sales Surge 19% in the UK as Younger Readers Turn to Scripture for Answers

Bible sales in the UK surged 19% in 2025, reaching a staggering £6.3 million according to data from NielsenIQ BookData presented at the London Book Fair. The figures represent a remarkable acceleration, nearly doubling from £3.6 million in 2019.

Previous analysis had already shown UK Bible sales climbing 87% between 2019 and 2024, from £2.69 million to £5.02 million. The latest numbers confirm the trend is not slowing down.

NielsenIQ also noted that quiz book sales grew 24%, the highest since records began in 1998, while adult fiction increased 5%. Non fiction, however, fell to its lowest levels since 2014. The data suggests a "sustained demand for escapism and insight" across the publishing industry.

Christian publisher SPCK attributed the Bible sales surge to "a renewed interest" in Scripture, particularly among younger readers seeking meaning in uncertain times.

Gen Z has unprecedented access to convenience and entertainment yet finds it insufficient.

Lauren Windle, SPCK's publishing director, pointed to a deeper spiritual hunger driving the numbers.

The findings align with multiple indicators of growing Christian engagement in the UK. The Bible Society's "Quiet Revival" report documented 12% of adults attending church monthly, up from 8% in 2018. Among men aged 18 to 24, the figure stands at 20%.

Organizations like Alpha reported record participation, while TryPraying saw orders double. However, the picture is not entirely one sided. Church of England attendance remains below pre pandemic levels and some churches continue to close.
