True Comfort Podcast Host Says Truth and Compassion Must Walk Together as Spiritual Abuse Survivors Flee Churches That Have Failed Them

Christian author and True Comfort Podcast host Teasi Cannon has published a sobering reflection in The Christian Post on 17 May 2026: many wounded Christians, especially those harmed by spiritual abuse, are finding more empathy outside the Church than within it. The Church, Cannon argues, must repair the gap or watch its wounded keep walking out the doors.

"Compassion and kindness are real virtues wherever they're found," Cannon writes. "And many wounded believers emerging from spiritual abuse have received more tenderness from secular voices than from the Church itself."

Why Wounded Christians Are Finding More Empathy Outside the Church

Cannon's central concern: "Truth without compassion can make wounded people stop listening before they ever hear it." Her own break from a beloved church after two decades, prompted by abusive leadership and a drift into hyper charismatic practices, has given her firsthand experience of the issue.

"Something has gone terribly wrong when wounded believers, Christ's own people, consistently find more patience, gentleness, and empathy outside the Church than within it." Cannon's solution is not to soften truth. The resurrection of Christ is historical fact and that truth must remain non negotiable. But truth alone, delivered without genuine emotional support, sends the hurting into the arms of secular therapists who treat them more tenderly than the Christians who claim to know the God of all comfort.

The Crusader's Opinion

The American evangelical Church has a wounded people problem. Spiritual abuse survivors, ex prodigal returnees, divorce survivors, and the chronically ill consistently report being judged or ignored by churches that should be their safest refuge. Cannon's diagnosis is correct. Christians must reclaim the territory of compassion that secular culture has occupied during our long inattention. Truth and tenderness walk together in the Gospel. Christ wept at the tomb of Lazarus before raising him. The Church must do the same.
