US forces, partnered with Nigeria's Armed Forces, have eliminated Abu Bilal al Minuki, identified as ISIS's second in command globally. The operation was announced by President Donald Trump on 16 May 2026 as "a meticulously planned and very complex mission."

"Abu Bilal al Minuki thought he could hide in Africa," Trump declared, "but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on his activities."

"With his removal," Trump said, "ISIS's global operation is greatly diminished." The administration framed the strike as both counterterrorism and religious liberty, targeting an enemy that has waged war on Christian minorities across Africa.

Trump also thanked the Nigerian government: "Thank you to the Government of Nigeria for your partnership on this operation."

The strike comes amid the ongoing crisis of Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks across Nigeria's Middle Belt and Borno State, where 40 schoolchildren were abducted just one day earlier from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School. The Trump counterterrorism doctrine has emphasised partnerships with local forces over open ended American troop deployments. The al Minuki strike is being held up as a flagship example.

The Crusader's Opinion

Abu Bilal al Minuki was a butcher. His organisation has slaughtered Christians across Africa for years. His death is a victory for the persecuted Church and for the principle that those who target believers do not escape consequence. Trump deserves credit for prioritising the strike. The Nigerian government deserves credit for cooperation. But while one ISIS commander is dead, dozens more remain. The work continues. Pray for US Special Operations, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the next strike.
