U.S. Navy Enforces Full Blockade of Iranian Ports as Oil Tankers Turned Back at Strait of Hormuz

The United States military has declared its naval blockade of Iranian ports "fully implemented," intercepting and turning back oil tankers attempting to leave Iran through the Strait of Hormuz.

On Tuesday, two oil tankers departing from Chabahar port in the Gulf of Oman were interdicted by U.S. forces and sent back to Iranian waters. The vessels are among at least eight tankers linked to Iran that have been intercepted since the blockade began on April 13, 2026.

Admiral Brad Cooper of U.S. Central Command confirmed the scope of the operation:

A blockade of Iranian ports has been fully implemented as U.S. forces maintain maritime superiority.

Cooper emphasized that within 36 hours of the blockade's launch, U.S. forces had "completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea." The blockade applies "impartially against vessels of all nations entering or leaving coastal areas or ports in Iran."

Among the vessels turned back was the Chinese owned tanker Rich Starry, which was warned by CENTCOM and redirected. Maritime experts report that some vessels have attempted evasive tactics, going "dark" or using false identification to avoid detection.

More than 10,000 U.S. troops are now enforcing the operation, supported by over a dozen warships and dozens of aircraft, including the USS George H.W. Bush carrier group currently heading to the Middle East.

Iran's military command has responded with threats to disrupt shipping traffic across the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Red Sea if the blockade continues. The Strait of Hormuz, only 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, normally carries roughly one fifth of the world's oil trade.
