Historian Tom Holland Named Durham Cathedral's First Ever Bede Librarian

Renowned historian and author Tom Holland has been appointed as the inaugural Bede Librarian at Durham Cathedral, an honorary role created to champion the significance of the cathedral's internationally important archives and collections.

The appointment, announced on 10 March 2026, honours the Venerable Bede, the 8th century English monk widely regarded as the father of English history. Bede completed his landmark work, "The Ecclesiastical History of the English People," around 731 AD, and his remains are buried in Durham Cathedral's Galilee Chapel.

Holland, best known for his book "Dominion: The Making of the Western Mind," expressed deep gratitude for the appointment.

Bede is the father of English history, so what greater honour could there possibly be for an English historian than to be appointed the Bede Librarian in the cathedral where he lies buried.

Tom Holland said in a statement released by Durham Cathedral.

The Dean of Durham, Philip Plyming, welcomed the appointment, highlighting Holland's ability to connect historical scholarship with a wider audience.

I am thrilled that Tom Holland has accepted the role of Bede Librarian at Durham Cathedral and will be contributing to our life and mission.

Dean Philip Plyming said.

The newly created position is designed to encourage wider public engagement with Bede's legacy as a historian, scholar, and theologian. Holland will deliver a public talk on "Cuthbert, Bede and the Renewal of Culture" at the cathedral on 26 May 2026, in conversation with Dean Plyming.

Holland previously made history as the first Canon Historian at Salisbury Cathedral, demonstrating his continued dedication to preserving and promoting England's Christian heritage through its ancient institutions.

Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries, was constructed specifically to house the bodies of St. Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. It stands as the largest and finest example of Norman architecture in England and a living monument to the Benedictine monastic tradition that shaped Western civilization.

The appointment underscores the cathedral's commitment to keeping Bede's intellectual and spiritual legacy alive for new generations, connecting modern audiences with the monk who first told the story of the English people through the lens of faith.

The Crusader's Opinion

This is what cultural renewal looks like. Tom Holland, a man who wrote an entire book explaining how Christianity shaped everything good about Western civilization, now stands as guardian of Bede's legacy in the very cathedral where that great monk is buried. Bede gave us our history. He gave us our calendar. He gave us our understanding of ourselves as a people under God. In an age where universities strip Christian heritage from their syllabuses and politicians treat the faith as an embarrassment, Durham Cathedral has done something bold: it has said that our Christian past matters, that it deserves a champion, and that champion is one of the most brilliant historians alive. Every cathedral in the West should follow this example.
