Belgian Radio Hosts Smash Statues of Jesus and Mary on Air, Admit They Would Never Do the Same to Islamic Symbols

Studio Brussel, a publicly funded Belgian youth radio station operated by national broadcaster VRT, has issued a formal apology after a January broadcast featured presenters violently smashing statues of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary on air.

The segment was part of a "Blue Monday" feature, a concept linked to post holiday melancholy in which listeners submit items causing them distress for the hosts to destroy live. Presenters Sam De Bruyn, Eva De Roo, and Dries Lenaerts took hammers to the Christian statues as entertainment for their audience.

The controversy exploded into public view when EWTN News correspondent Colm Flynn confronted the three hosts at the Radiodays Europe conference in Riga, Latvia on March 23, 2026. Flynn's pointed questioning went viral across social media platforms.

Would you smash a symbol of the Prophet Muhammad?

Flynn asked directly. De Bruyn responded that doing so would be "dangerous," while the hosts cited their Catholic upbringing as giving them "a little more credit" to treat Christian imagery casually.

Eva De Roo apologized during the interview, acknowledging the segment was inappropriate. De Bruyn attempted to downplay the backlash, stating that Belgium is "not a very religious country" and the destruction "might" be offensive, "but in Belgium, not really."

VRT subsequently issued a formal statement admitting the segment was "misjudged" and that Studio Brussel failed to recognize "how sensitive religious symbols" are to many people. The statement confirmed that Eva and Dries offered apologies and said they "would make different choices today."

Belgium's population is approximately 59% non religious, with 15% Muslim and significant Catholic communities remaining across the nation.

The interview footage posted by Colm Flynn has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on X (formerly Twitter), with widespread condemnation from Christians and free speech advocates alike. The incident has reignited debate across Europe about the persistent double standard in how Western institutions treat Christianity compared to other faiths.

The Crusader's Opinion

There it is, straight from their own mouths. They smashed Jesus. They smashed the Blessed Virgin Mary. And when asked if they would do the same to Muhammad, they said it would be "dangerous." Not wrong. Not disrespectful. Dangerous. That single word tells you everything about the state of Christianity in post Christian Europe. Our faith is the only one you are allowed to mock, desecrate, and destroy on taxpayer funded airwaves with zero consequences. Try that with a Quran in any European country and see what happens. Try it with a Torah scroll. You would be arrested, fired, and blacklisted within hours. But smash Christ on live radio? You get a polite apology and a pat on the back. These presenters admitted the double standard on camera and the world shrugged. Christians, wake up. If we do not defend our own sacred symbols with the same ferocity others defend theirs, we will lose everything our ancestors built and died for.
