Coaltown Baptist Church Launches GoFundMe After Tornado Ripped Off Sanctuary Roof, Destroyed Fellowship Hall, and Damaged Sunday School Rooms

The Christian community at Coaltown Baptist Church in Purvis, Mississippi, the same congregation that famously sang "Amazing Grace" while a tornado tore the roof off their fellowship hall on 7 May 2026, is now asking for help rebuilding their sanctuary.

Pastor Jimmy Breazeale has launched a 50,000 dollar GoFundMe campaign. As of 12 May 2026, the campaign had raised less than 3,000 dollars.

"We are asking for prayers first and foremost," Breazeale said. "If you feel led to help financially, any donation, big or small, will go directly toward rebuilding."

Every single congregation member walked out of the building alive. As the tornado peaked, worshippers gathered in a hallway behind the sanctuary and sang a hymn of faith. The walls "just moved back and forth," one witness reported. The tornado was one of at least 14 that swept Mississippi that evening. Approximately 400 homes were damaged statewide and 17 people injured. Neighbours who lost their own homes still helped Coaltown clear the rubble. The Christian Church does not abandon its own.

The Crusader's Opinion

Coaltown Baptist Church survived a tornado on the strength of "Amazing Grace" and divine protection. Now they need rebuilding capital. Three thousand dollars raised against a fifty thousand dollar goal is not enough. Every Christian who shared the viral video of the singing during the storm should now share the GoFundMe. This is exactly what the Body of Christ is for: catching the fallen church, lifting the rubble, restoring the sanctuary. Send twenty dollars. Send two hundred. Send what God has put on your heart. Coaltown does not need pity. They need partners.
