Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria Condemns Mass Killings and Demands Government Action to Protect Christians

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria has released a blistering statement titled "The Cry of the Innocent: Stop This Slaughterhouse in Nigeria!" condemning the Nigerian government's failure to protect its citizens from relentless terrorist violence. The statement marks the strongest rebuke from the Church in years.

CSN Secretary General Fr. Michael Banjo and National Director of Social Communications Fr. Michael Nsikak Umoh expressed "profound outrage and sorrow at the ongoing assault on human life and dignity." They declared that the violence is "not instability" but "a massacre allowed by silence."

The Church officials warned that "Nigeria cannot afford to normalize bloodshed or treat mass killings as routine tragedies." They called the ongoing slaughter a "betrayal of every Nigerian's right to live in peace."

The statement comes after a devastating wave of attacks. On January 3, over 30 people were slaughtered in Kasuwan Daji village in Niger State, where a Catholic compound was desecrated. In November 2025, 320 people were kidnapped from a Catholic school in Papiri, Kontagora Diocese.

On February 7, Father Nathaniel Asuwaye was kidnapped from Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kafanchan Diocese. The Church demanded authorities "redeploy security forces from ceremonial press centers to the actual front lines where citizens are under siege."

Pope Leo XIV joined the condemnation during his weekly Sunday Angelus prayer, calling on "competent authorities" to "work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen." Multiple ecclesiastical provinces across northern Nigeria issued separate statements warning that "farmlands meant to sustain life have increasingly become places of danger."

The Catholic Church in Nigeria has finally said what the world refuses to say: this is a slaughterhouse.

Priests kidnapped from their altars. Schools raided. Villages burned to ash. And the government offers nothing but "empty condolences."

When the shepherds of Christ's flock are forced to beg their own government to stop the killing, something is deeply, fundamentally broken. We stand with our Catholic brothers and sisters in Nigeria. Their cry must become our cry.
