Spain's Parliament Passes Historic Vote to Defend 388 Million Persecuted Christians
Spain's parliament approves initiative to strengthen the defence of persecuted Christians worldwide as 388 million believers face persecution.
Spain Votes to Defend Persecuted Christians Worldwide in Historic Parliamentary Move
Spain's Foreign Affairs Committee has approved a groundbreaking initiative to strengthen the nation's defence of persecuted Christians around the world. The motion, presented by the conservative Popular Party, passed by a single vote with 18 abstentions on March 4, 2026.
The proposal calls on Spain to strengthen its diplomatic action and take a leadership role in condemning religious persecution within the European Union, the Council of Europe, and the United Nations. It also links respect for human rights to international agreements, connecting the defence of religious freedom to preventing forced migration.
MP Maribel Sanchez of the Popular Party presented the initiative, displaying the Open Doors World Watch List 2026 map during her speech. She declared that religious freedom "is not a confessional privilege" but "a fundamental human right" and "an indicator of democratic quality."
Jordi Salvador of Esquerra Republicana supported the measure, stating:
There are no second class beliefs.
Alberto Asarta of Vox highlighted the grim realities of Christian persecution, including "kidnappings, sexual violence, crimes" against believers worldwide.
Not all parties were supportive. Maria Dolores Corujo of the PSOE criticized the proposal as "populist Islamophobia," accusing the Popular Party of "persecuting Muslims." Agustin Santos Maraver of Sumar voted against the motion but acknowledged that fighting all forms of persecution matters.
The vote comes as Open Doors' World Watch List 2026 reports that 388 million Christians now live in countries with high to extreme levels of persecution. Aid to the Church in Need estimates that 5.4 billion people live in nations with serious religious freedom violations.
Spain's Parliament Takes Stand for Religious Freedom and Persecuted Believers

The initiative represents a significant moment for European politics, where governments have often been reluctant to single out the persecution of Christians as a distinct crisis. Spain is now positioned to become a leading voice in international forums calling for concrete action to protect Christian minorities.
The narrow margin of the vote, however, underscores the deep political divisions surrounding the issue of religious persecution in Europe.
The Crusader's Opinion
Three hundred and eighty eight million. That is the number of Christians living under the boot of persecution right now. And when Spain's parliament dared to say their names, to call out the kidnappings, the rapes, the murders, the socialist PSOE had the audacity to call it "Islamophobia." Let that sink in. Defending Christians from being slaughtered is now considered bigotry by Europe's left. If 388 million Muslims were under persecution, every parliament in the West would have passed resolutions months ago. The Popular Party and Vox showed spine. One vote. That is how close this came to being silenced. God bless every lawmaker who stood on the right side of eternity.
