Shocking Poll: Most Catholics and Protestants Now Support Abortion

New PRRI survey finds 61% of Americans and majorities of mainline Protestants and Catholics support legal abortion after Dobbs.

A new survey released by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) reveals that 61% of Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, with significant majorities among mainline Protestants and Catholics also supporting legal access.

The study, based on interviews with 22,111 U.S. adults conducted throughout 2025 as part of PRRI's American Values Atlas, found that 25% of Americans support abortion legality in all cases while 36% support it in most cases.

Among religious groups, 65% of white mainline Protestants, 62% of Hispanic Catholics, and 57% of white Catholics said abortion should be legal in all or most cases. These numbers represent a notable decline from 2024, when 69% of white mainline Protestants and 62% of white Catholics expressed similar views.

Groups with the lowest support for legal abortion include Hispanic Protestants at 40%, Latter day Saints at 31%, white evangelical Protestants at 27%, and Jehovah's Witnesses at 21%.

The data shows a strong correlation between religious practice and abortion views. Among those who oppose legal abortion, 68% attend religious services weekly and 44% read religious texts weekly.

Geographically, Vermont (78%), Massachusetts (77%), and Rhode Island (76%) had the highest support for legal abortion, while Utah (64% opposed) and West Virginia (54% opposed) showed the strongest opposition.

The survey also revealed a political dimension, with 86% of Democrats, 65% of independents, and only 38% of Republicans supporting legal abortion in most or all cases. The survey carried a margin of error of plus or minus 0.87 percentage points.

PRRI Survey Reveals Shifting Christian Views on Abortion After Dobbs Decision

The findings come nearly four years after the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson decision overturned Roe v. Wade, returning abortion regulation to individual states. Despite this landmark ruling, public support for legal abortion has remained relatively stable nationally, though specific Christian groups have shown measurable shifts.

Black Protestants showed 70% support for legal abortion, while religiously unaffiliated Americans supported it at 82%. Among other faith traditions, Jews (80%), Buddhists (79%), and Hindus (78%) showed the strongest support.

The Crusader's Opinion

When the majority of people who call themselves Catholic or Protestant tell pollsters they support killing unborn children, something has gone catastrophically wrong inside the Church. This is not a political issue. This is a spiritual crisis. Every single abortion ends a life created in the image of God. No poll, no Supreme Court ruling, and no cultural shift changes that eternal truth. The fact that 57% of white Catholics support legal abortion while their own Church teaches it is a grave moral evil tells you everything you need to know about how far Western Christianity has drifted from Scripture. We do not take our morality from surveys. We take it from the Word of God.
