Wisconsin Sheriff Files $1 Million Defamation Lawsuit After Woman's ICE Detention Story Debunked by Hotel Records and Surveillance Footage
Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt has filed a $1 million defamation lawsuit against Sundas "Sunny" Naqvi, a 28 year old U.S. citizen from Skokie, Illinois, after her widely publicized claims of being detained by federal immigration agents were contradicted by mounting evidence.
Naqvi alleged that she and five coworkers were detained for approximately 30 hours at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on March 5 after returning from a work trip to Turkey. She further claimed authorities transferred her to an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, and then to a Wisconsin jail run by Sheriff Schmidt.
The lawsuit, filed on Friday, presents a starkly different account. A hotel ledger shows Naqvi checked into a Hampton Inn and Suites in Rosemont, Illinois, approximately three hours after landing at O'Hare on March 5.
Screenshots of text messages from March 5 and 6, included in the filing, show Naqvi asking a witness to borrow their card to order food and mentioning she wanted to "check out the hotel gym." In another message, she asked to use the card for a spa treatment.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security released surveillance images showing Naqvi leaving O'Hare approximately 90 minutes after her arrival, directly contradicting her claim of being held for 30 hours. Additional surveillance footage from March 7 captured her at a Wisconsin gas station.
Sundas Naqvi was not detained by ICE at any time. She was not transported to Broadview detention facility. She was not transported across state lines to Dodge County by law enforcement.
That statement came from Sheriff Dale Schmidt during a press conference presenting the evidence.

The lawsuit also names Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison as a co defendant, alleging he amplified Naqvi's claims publicly and caused further reputational harm. Schmidt is seeking at least $1 million in damages from each defendant.
According to Dodge County authorities, Naqvi allegedly convinced an unnamed ex boyfriend to pay for her flight to Turkey, drive her to Wisconsin, and pose as a co worker to help fabricate the detention story. The ex boyfriend was described as a "romance scam victim" who spent over $25,000 in a single month to help construct the narrative.
Court records also reveal Naqvi has a history of filing false reports. In 2019, she filed a false sexual assault report with Skokie police, later pleading guilty and receiving two years of probation before the case was dismissed.
The Crusader's Opinion
This is what happens when victimhood becomes currency. A woman fabricates a dramatic story of government oppression, a willing politician amplifies it for political points, and the media runs with it before a single fact is verified. Meanwhile, real victims of injustice are drowned out by the noise. The truth came out because one sheriff refused to let lies stand. Imagine if every leader had that kind of backbone. False accusations do not just harm the accused; they steal credibility from every genuine cry for help. There must be consequences for those who weaponize victimhood.
