Save the Storks CEO Diane Ferraro: Motherhood Transcends Loss, Infertility, and Broken Dreams

Adopted, Widowed, and Now a Foster Mother Diane Ferraro Tells Christians That Mother's Day Belongs to Every Woman Who Has Nurtured a Child

On Mother's Day 2026, Diane Ferraro, CEO of Save the Storks, has written a powerful reflection on the meaning of motherhood through the lens of profound personal loss, adoption, infertility, and the unexpected callings God assigns His daughters.

"Just because we couldn't conceive, or raise a child from infancy to adulthood, doesn't mean we're not moms," Ferraro writes.

How Christian Mothers Find Calling Through Adoption Loss and Suffering

Ferraro's own life reads like a litany of redirected dreams. Adopted as a baby by infertile parents. Lost her adoptive mother at age 8.

Two failed marriages. Personal infertility struggles. The eventual adoption of a teenage daughter through a foster to adoption programme. The sudden death of her second husband from a ruptured AVM, leaving her a single mother to a teenager. "I felt that I had lost two moms," she writes.

Her theology is anchored in Romans 5:1 to 5: "God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." Motherhood, she argues, is far larger than biology or any single story arc.

It includes every woman who has loved, nurtured, and laid down her life for a child. Mother's Day belongs to all of them.

The Crusader's Opinion

Mother's Day is one of the hardest days of the year for Christian women navigating infertility, miscarriage, adoption struggles, or the loss of a child. Diane Ferraro's testimony is a gift to all of them. The Bible defines motherhood as fruitfulness of love, not just fruitfulness of womb. Foster mothers are mothers. Adoptive mothers are mothers. Spiritual mothers are mothers. Aunts who raised nieces are mothers. The Body of Christ must learn to honour every woman who has ever loved a child as her own. Today, especially, give her flowers.
