Rubio Lands at the Vatican to Patch Up Trumps Open Feud With Pope Leo Over Iran
Secretary of State Marco Rubio Meets Pope Leo at the Holy See After Pontiff's Anti War Comments Drew Public Trump Rebuke
Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived at the Vatican on 7 May 2026 to meet with Pope Leo, attempting to lower the temperature on a remarkable public feud between President Trump and the pontiff over the ongoing Iran War.
Pope Leo declared in his Palm Sunday homily that Jesus "rejects war" and that "no one can use Him to justify war." The Pope went further on social media: "God does not bless any conflict."

Trump fired back in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, complaining the Pope appeared to tolerate Iran possessing nuclear weapons.
He had earlier posted on Truth Social that he did not want "a Pope who thinks it's OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon."
Rubio, himself a Catholic, downplayed the trip as previously scheduled but reframed Trump's position diplomatically: the President's actual concern, Rubio said, is that a nuclear armed Iran would threaten populations including Catholics and Christians across the Middle East.
The State Department says the meeting will focus on the Middle East and Western Hemisphere interests.
The Crusader's Opinion
The Pope is right that war is a tragedy and that no leader should treat it casually. Trump is right that an Iranian nuclear weapon would be the gravest threat to Christians in the Middle East in a century. Rubio is the right Catholic in the right room at the right time. The Christian world cannot afford an open rupture between the Holy See and Washington while Iranian backed militias are bombing convents in Lebanon. Pray for both leaders. Pray for clarity. The cost of misalignment between Rome and the United States will be paid in Christian blood.
