Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape personally toured the MV YWAM PNG medical ship in late January, bringing top government ministers from transport, defense, and higher education aboard the vessel.

The 60 meter ship, originally built in 1999 as a cruise catamaran and converted into a floating medical facility in 2014, currently accommodates up to 130 volunteers. It operates as an officially registered health facility, reaching remote coastal and river communities across Papua New Guinea's more than 5,000 kilometers of coastline.

At the time of the Prime Minister's visit, approximately 100 volunteers from 14 nations were aboard preparing to deliver critical health services in partnership with local healthcare workers.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed "long standing support for ship based services that bring healthcare, training, and development directly to coastal and riverine communities."

His wife, Rachael Marape, serves as Co Patron of YWAM Medical Ships and actively advocates for maternal and child health initiatives throughout the island nation.

Since 2010, the partnership between YWAM Medical Ships and Papua New Guinea's National Department of Health has delivered over 2.3 million healthcare and training services to some of the most remote communities on earth.

Managing Director Ken Mulligan described the collaboration as combining "local knowledge, skills, and commitment with broad support, training, and resources."

The ship was preparing for its first voyage of 2026 to Western Province when the Prime Minister made his visit, underscoring the government's continued commitment to expanding ship based healthcare delivery.

With 84% of Papua New Guinea's population living in rural areas, the MV YWAM PNG serves as a lifeline for communities that would otherwise have little or no access to medical care. The ship carries a dental clinic, day procedure unit, laboratory, and four patrol tenders that allow multiple medical teams to work ashore simultaneously.

The visit marks a continued deepening of ties between the Papua New Guinean government and the Christian organization, which has operated in the region for over 15 years.

The Crusader's Opinion

This is what the body of Christ looks like in action. While mainstream media obsesses over division, YWAM Medical Ships quietly sails into the most forgotten corners of the earth and heals the sick, just as Christ commanded. Over 2.3 million services delivered. No fanfare. No government grants from Western nations with strings attached. Just faithful Christians from 14 nations showing up and doing the work. When a sitting Prime Minister brings his cabinet aboard a Christian medical ship and calls it essential, that tells you everything about the power of the Gospel lived out. This is Christendom at its finest.
