Palestinian Terrorists Hide Inside Saint Georges Church Near Bethlehem IDF Refuses to Enter Holy Site

Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint George Used as Human Shield by Militants on the Feast Day Itself

Two Palestinian militants hurled Molotov cocktails at Israeli vehicles at the al Khader junction in Gush Etzion on the evening of 6 May 2026, then fled into the historic Saint George's Church in al Khader, near Bethlehem, during the very celebration of the Feast of Saint George.

The IDF response was striking. Despite pursuing the attackers, troops did not enter the church, opting to withdraw to preserve the holy site.

"Terrorists fled into a church during worship, using Christians as human shields," the IDF said. The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that "Israeli forces deliberately avoided entering the church to protect civilians and respect the sanctity of the holy site." Israel's envoy to the Christian World, George Deek, added: "This is not an isolated story."

The Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint George traces its earliest sections to the 16th century, with the current main structure completed in 1912. Violent clashes between local Christian and Muslim residents broke out after the Israeli forces departed. Palestinian media reported one person wounded after being beaten in the aftermath. There were no casualties from the original Molotov attack.

The Crusader's Opinion

Two militants attacked an Israeli convoy and then ran for cover inside a working Christian church on the very feast day of its patron saint. This is the cynicism of jihadist tactics in microcosm. Christian holy sites are not refuges for terrorists. Centuries of Christian heritage are not bargaining chips. The IDF's restraint here is honourable. The militants' choice is despicable. Christian leaders in Bethlehem must speak out clearly. Holy sites are for prayer, not for hideouts. Western Christians must defend them too.
