Lionsgate has just made official what Christian audiences have been waiting on for two decades. The Resurrection of the Christ, Mel Gibson's two part sequel to The Passion of the Christ, will hit theatres on 26 March 2027 (Good Friday) and 6 May 2027 (Ascension Day). First look images dropped alongside the announcement.

What We Know About The Resurrection of the Christ

Filmed at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and on location in Matera, southern Italy, the project pairs Gibson with screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart). Gibson has described the screenplay as exploring Hell, Sheol, fallen angels, and the origins of Satan, well beyond a straight Gospel retelling.

The cast is entirely new. Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus. Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene. Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate. Kasia Smutniak as Mary. Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter. Rupert Everett in a supporting role. Gibson opted for full recasting rather than digital de aging.
