John Cleese Defends Christianity After Decades of Mocking It: Is This Hypocrisy or a Wake Up Call?

British comedy legend John Cleese, 86, sparked a firestorm on social media after posting on X that the United Kingdom "has always been based at the deepest level on Christian values" and warning that if those values "are replaced by Islamic ones, this will not be Britain any more."

The post, made on March 16, 2026, came in response to London Assembly member Susan Hall, who urged Britain to "fight for our culture and remain a Christian Country."

Cleese wrote: "The UK has always been based at the deepest level on Christian values, regardless of dogma. Despite the many mistakes made by churches, for centuries British people have been influenced by Christ's teaching. If these values are replaced by Islamic ones, this will not be Britain any more."

The backlash was immediate. Critics pointed to the stunning irony that Cleese built much of his career mocking the very faith he now claims to defend.

Australian barrister Gray Connolly challenged him directly:

You and your boomer celeb ilk mocked Christianity relentlessly, and not just through Life of Brian... and now you are wondering what happened to the Britain of Christian values... do you read what you have written?

Connolly was referencing the 1979 Monty Python film Life of Brian, which satirized the life of Jesus Christ and drew fierce condemnation from Christian leaders at the time.

In a now legendary 1979 BBC debate, journalist Malcolm Muggeridge called the film "a ridiculing of the founder of the Christian religion" presented in a "cheap, tenth rate way." Anglican Bishop Mervyn Stockwood compared Cleese and co star Michael Palin to those who mocked Jesus at Calvary.

The situation draws parallels to atheist Richard Dawkins, who in 2024 described himself as a "cultural Christian," lamenting Christianity's waning influence while still dismissing its core beliefs as "nonsense."

Since late 2025, Cleese has grown increasingly vocal on X, using his platform of 4.9 million followers to criticize Islamic sectarianism, Pakistani grooming gangs, and British institutions he believes enable Islamist influence. He has also expressed support for Rupert Lowe's new party Restore Britain.

The debate highlights a growing tension in Western secular societies: those who spent decades undermining Christianity now find themselves alarmed by the cultural vacuum it left behind.

The Crusader's Opinion

The irony is thick enough to choke on. John Cleese spent his entire career making a fortune mocking Jesus Christ, ridiculing the Church, and helping an entire generation of Britons laugh their faith into the grave. Now, standing in the cultural wasteland he helped create, he has the nerve to wonder where all the Christians went.

Here is the truth: you cannot spend fifty years spitting on the Cross and then clutch your pearls when the mosque goes up next door. Christianity was not just "nice values" that made Britain pleasant. It was the foundation stone. Pull it out, and the whole house collapses. That is exactly what we are watching happen across Europe.

Better late than never, Mr. Cleese. But the millions of faithful who held the line while you mocked them deserve more than a tweet.
