Christian School Forced to Close After Labour VAT Policy Devastates Faith Based Education

Malvern St James School, a Christian girls' school with over a century of history in Great Malvern, Worcestershire, has announced it is proposing to close at the end of the current academic year.

The school's Management Board made the announcement on 23 April 2026, citing a "significant and continuing decline in pupil numbers" and a "substantial annual shortfall of more than £6 million." The Board stated that "small class sizes and highly individualised education" had become "increasingly difficult to sustain."

Nationally, Labour's introduction of VAT on private school fees and increased employment costs have placed enormous pressure on the independent education sector. Approximately 100 independent schools across the UK have already closed as a direct result of the policy.

Not everyone can home educate, and low cost Christian schools are already being forced to close.

Andrea Williams, CEO of the Christian Legal Centre, made the statement as she highlighted how the policy disproportionately affects smaller faith based schools that cannot absorb the financial blow.

Former Sky News presenter Colin Brazier described the policy as "ideological vandalism," pointing to the devastating effect on schools that serve families of modest means rather than the wealthy elite.

Critics argue the VAT policy hits smaller, faith based institutions hardest while prestigious schools like Eton and Harrow can weather the financial impact with ease. A Court of Appeal rejected a legal challenge from Christian schools, parents, and students earlier in 2026, but a Supreme Court appeal is now being planned.

Labour VAT Raid Threatens Christian Education Across the UK

The proposed closure would see a planned and orderly wind down, with the Board prioritising the protection of pupils in examination years and ensuring their education remains unaffected during the transition.

Malvern St James has educated generations of young women in the Christian tradition, shaping their character and faith since its founding over a century ago. Its loss represents more than the closure of a school; it is the erasure of a Christian institution from the educational landscape of England.

The Crusader's Opinion

Make no mistake: this is not just about one school. This is a calculated assault on Christian education in Britain. Labour's VAT raid on private schools does nothing to improve state education. It simply punishes parents who choose to raise their children in the faith. The elites at Eton will barely notice. The families at Malvern St James? They lose everything. Over 100 schools gone. How many were Christian? How many quietly taught children to love God? This government would never dare impose such a policy on Islamic schools. The hypocrisy is staggering. When the state drives Christian education underground, that is persecution with a tax code.
