Elizabeth Smart Wins Bodybuilding Competition After Surviving Kidnapping, Says She Wants to 'Celebrate' Her Body
Elizabeth Smart, the kidnapping survivor who was abducted at knifepoint at age 14 from her Salt Lake City home in 2002, has stunned followers by revealing she has been quietly competing in bodybuilding competitions.
Smart, now 38, won first place in the Fit Model Novice category at the Wasatch Warrior bodybuilding and fitness competition in Salt Lake City, Utah on April 18, 2026. She also placed second in Class D and third in the Masters 35 plus category.
The child safety advocate shared her transformation on social media, admitting she had competed in four bodybuilding competitions but was previously too afraid to share publicly.
I am so proud of myself for doing this. I am so proud of my body. My body has carried me through every worst day, every hellish grueling experience.
Smart was held captive for nine months by Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee after being taken from her bedroom in June 2002. During her captivity, she endured starvation, daily assaults, and horrific abuse before being rescued in March 2003.
Despite the trauma she endured, Smart has dedicated her life to advocacy and child safety through the Elizabeth Smart Foundation. She married Matthew Gilmour in 2012 and the couple has three children.
I don't want to reach the end of my life and look back and feel regret. Embracing my chance at life to the absolute fullest I can.
Smart explained that bodybuilding has become a way for her to reclaim ownership of her body after years of having that autonomy taken from her. The Fit Model division, which was added to competitions last year, serves as an entry level option for female bodybuilders.

The Crusader's Opinion
Elizabeth Smart's story is a testament to the unbreakable human spirit that God places within each of us. This woman survived nine months of unspeakable evil at the hands of a monster who twisted scripture to justify his depravity. And now she stands on a stage, not as a victim, but as a champion. That is the power of faith, resilience, and refusing to let evil have the final word. Her abductor is rotting in a prison cell. She is winning trophies. God's justice works in mysterious and beautiful ways.
