John Piper Slams Soul Sleep Doctrine: Christians Are With Christ the Moment They Die
Pastor and Theologian Piper Cites 2 Corinthians 5 to Reject Belief That Souls Sleep Until Resurrection
Veteran pastor and theologian John Piper has issued a strong rebuke of the doctrine of "soul sleep", the belief that human consciousness ceases at death until the bodily resurrection. Piper insists that Scripture teaches Christians enter Christ's conscious presence the moment they die.
"To die is to lose the body temporarily and to go be at home with the Lord," Piper said.
John Piper Defends Conscious Afterlife and Rejects Soul Sleep Theology
Drawing on 2 Corinthians 5:6 to 8, 1 Thessalonians 4:16 to 17, and Philippians 1:22 to 24, Piper argues Paul's writings allow only two states for the believer: embodied life on earth, or conscious presence with Christ. There is no third middle state.
"We would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord," Piper said, citing Paul. "Paul did not conceive of a time when the body dies and we are not at home with the Lord." On the second coming, Piper added: "There is no ranking. We go together to meet the Lord in the air." The bodies of believers remain in their graves until the resurrection, but the soul, Piper insists, departs immediately into the conscious presence of Jesus.
The Crusader's Opinion
The doctrine of soul sleep is comforting to no one. It empties the deathbed of hope. It strips the funeral of comfort. It contradicts every direct word of Paul. John Piper is right to be unflinching. When a believer dies, they are with Christ. Now. Today. At home with the Lord. Every grieving Christian deserves to know this. Every doubting Christian needs to hear this. The same God who emptied the tomb on Easter morning empties the deathbed for every saint who calls on His name. The body sleeps. The soul sees Jesus.
