JD Hall Embezzlement Charges Dropped After Deferred Sentence: What Happened to the Protestia Founder?

The embezzlement case against former polemics blogger Jordan Daniel "J.D." Hall has been officially dismissed after he fulfilled a deferred sentencing agreement in Richland County, Montana.

On March 3, Richland County District Judge Olivia Rieger ruled there was "good cause" to allow Hall to withdraw his nolo contendere plea, dismiss the charges against him, and seal the case files from the general public.

Hall, once known as the outspoken voice behind the now defunct websites Pulpit & Pen and Protestia, was removed as lead pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Sidney, Montana in 2022. The church alleged he had abused prescription Xanax beyond his prescribed dosage, physically abused his wife and son, and committed theft exceeding $10,000 by embezzlement.

Prosecutors estimated that Hall misappropriated over $100,000 in church funds over a five year period for personal and political use.

In September 2024, Hall entered a nolo contendere (no contest) plea as part of a deferred sentencing agreement. Under the terms, he was ordered to pay $15,454.44 in restitution to Fellowship Baptist Church, issue a court ordered apology to the congregation, and report to a probation officer. He was also subject to a three year prohibition on weapons, bars, and casinos, and was required to abstain from drugs and alcohol.

Having successfully completed all conditions of his deferred sentence, the court dismissed the charges and sealed the records.

The deferred sentence does not result in a conviction.

Hall stated, maintaining that he never pleaded guilty. He further claimed the charges made by the church were "made without the semblance of any meaningful investigation" and that he was "left to do the investigation to prove my own innocence."

Hall has publicly stated he has no plans to return to ministry.

The dismissal and sealing of records means the case is effectively closed from public view. Under Montana law, a deferred sentence that is successfully completed does not result in a criminal conviction on the defendant's record.

Fellowship Baptist Church has not issued a public statement regarding the dismissal. The church had previously stood behind their decision to remove Hall from his pastoral role in 2022 after the allegations surfaced.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let us be clear about something: embezzling from a church is stealing from God's people. Whether the legal system ultimately dismissed the charges or not, a congregation was wounded, trust was shattered, and a ministry was destroyed. The sealing of these records does not seal the damage done to the body of Christ. Accountability matters. Pastors are held to a higher standard in Scripture, and the flock deserves shepherds who handle both the Word and the offering plate with integrity. The world watches how we deal with our own, and we must never flinch from demanding righteousness within our own walls.
