Israeli Troops Bulldoze Solar Panels and Olive Groves in Christian Lebanese Village

Debel in Southern Lebanon Hit as IDF Launches Investigation Following Earlier Sledgehammer Desecration of Jesus Statue

Israeli troops have destroyed solar panel installations, damaged industrial vehicles, and torn through water systems, homes, roads, and olive groves in Debel, a predominantly Christian village in southern Lebanon, prompting the IDF to launch an internal investigation.

The damage in Debel, reported on 2 May 2026, comes weeks after a separate Israeli soldier was filmed striking a Jesus statue with a sledgehammer in the same region. Italian UN forces ended up donating a replacement statue.

Christian Communities in Southern Lebanon Caught Between IDF Operations

The IDF told media the latest incident is "under review" and that the conduct shown "does not reflect the army's values," promising disciplinary action if wrongdoing is confirmed. The soldiers caught attacking the Jesus statue were each handed 30 day prison sentences and removed from combat service. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally criticised that earlier desecration.

Debel was not initially ordered to evacuate when Israeli forces established a security zone in southern Lebanon, between the border and the Litani River. The village is home to one of the historic Maronite Christian communities that has lived in the region for centuries. Critics fear religious motivations, not just military necessity, may now be driving troop conduct in a string of incidents targeting Christian symbols and infrastructure.

The Crusader's Opinion

The Christians of southern Lebanon are caught between Hezbollah and the IDF, and now their solar panels and olive groves are being shredded by Israeli diggers. A previous incident saw a soldier take a sledgehammer to a statue of Jesus Christ. These are not the actions of an army that respects the religious heritage of the land it operates in. Israel must investigate honestly, prosecute fully, and confront the religious bias that appears to be driving repeated incidents. Christians have lived in Lebanon since the days of Saint Maron. They will not be erased.
