Young Christian Wins Right to Change Her Official Religious Classification From Islam to Christianity in Iraq's State Records
An Iraqi court has approved the request of a young Christian woman to change her official religious classification from Islam to Christianity in state records, a near unprecedented ruling that strikes at the heart of one of Islam's most consequential legal principles.
The decision, announced on 14 May 2026, will now be reviewed by Iraq's Federal Court of Cassation, the highest court for personal status matters.
Under Iraq's National Card Law, children automatically adopt Islam if one parent converts. The plaintiff, raised in a Christian family, was classified as Muslim as a child after her mother remarried a Muslim man.

"Everyone has the fundamental right to choose and live according to their religion," declared Kelsey Zorzi, Director of Advocacy for Global Religious Freedom at ADF International, the organisation backing the case.
The woman launched the legal proceedings in January 2025.
The ruling matters far beyond Iraq. State assigned religion is a defining feature of the legal systems of Iraq, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Egypt. Such classifications determine marriage rights, inheritance, education access, and family law outcomes. A successful precedent in Iraq could ripple across the Muslim world, where leaving Islam is often legally impossible and socially fatal.
The Crusader's Opinion
For centuries the doctrine of apostasy has held that a Muslim cannot leave Islam, and Islamic states have built their entire personal status law around enforcing that prohibition. An Iraqi court has now ruled that a Christian woman raised by Christian parents but stamped Muslim by the state can finally have her records corrected to match her actual faith. It is one small ruling in one young woman's life and a potential earthquake for religious freedom across the Islamic world. Pray the Federal Court of Cassation upholds it. Pray Egypt, Pakistan, and Malaysia are watching. Pray ADF International keeps fighting case after case until apostasy law cracks.
