India's Shocking New Law Could Seize Church Properties and Block All Foreign Aid to Missionaries

India's FCRA Amendment Bill could allow the government to seize church properties and block foreign aid to Christian missionaries across the nation.

India's New FCRA Bill Could Strip Churches of Property and Cut Off Foreign Funding to Christian Missions

India's proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the Christian community across the subcontinent. The amendment would grant a government appointed "Designated Authority" the power to seize assets from any organization whose foreign contribution license is cancelled, surrendered, or simply not renewed.

The implications for Christian missions, hospitals, schools, and churches are staggering. Since the BJP took power in 2014, more than 20,000 FCRA licenses have been revoked or allowed to lapse, cutting off vital foreign funding to organizations that serve India's most vulnerable communities. According to reports, more than 70% of affected organizations are tied to Christian programs.

Major organizations like World Vision India, the Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), and the Evangelical Fellowship of India have already had their FCRA registrations cancelled in recent years.

This is a dangerous and deeply alarming crisis, with immediate consequences.

Those were the words of Dr. Joseph D'Souza, head of the All India Christian Council, describing the existential threat the bill poses.

Release International's local partner in India warned that the legislation "aims to enable state takeover of ecclesiastical property, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities built through global philanthropy."

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) expressed grave concern and sent a protest letter to Interior Minister Amit Shah. The All India Catholic Union reported over 700 incidents of targeted persecution against Christians in 2025 alone, with at least 150 verified cases involving disruption of worship, vandalism, and physical assaults during the Christmas season.

Following intense opposition from Christian leaders, minority groups, and several state chief ministers including M. K. Stalin and Pinarayi Vijayan, the bill has been deferred to the June through August parliamentary session.

Paul Robinson, CEO of Release International, stated that the amendment reflects an increasingly hostile environment for Christians in India. The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, one of the most influential Latino Christian organizations in the United States, has also called on the Indian government to withdraw the bill entirely.

DMK MP Wilson alleged the bill was deliberately introduced during Easter to cause maximum fear among the Christian community. Critics say this is part of a broader strategy by Hindu nationalist forces to undermine minority religious institutions under the guise of regulating foreign funding.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let us be crystal clear about what is happening in India. A government is writing laws specifically designed to steal property that Christians built with their own hands and their own donations. Churches, schools, hospitals built over decades of sacrifice and service to the poorest of the poor now face government seizure because a bureaucrat decided not to renew a piece of paper.

Over 20,000 organizations defunded. Over 700 documented attacks on Christians in a single year. And the so called "world's largest democracy" introduces a bill during Holy Week to terrorize its own citizens. Imagine if a Christian nation proposed seizing every mosque and Islamic school that received foreign funding. The United Nations would convene an emergency session before sundown. But when it is Christians? Silence.

India's 30 million Christians deserve the same protection as every other citizen. The West must not look away.
