India's Government Moves to Seize Christian Properties Under New FCRA Amendment Bill 2026

Indian Christians are sounding the alarm as the government pushes forward with sweeping amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act that could give authorities the power to seize churches, schools, and hospitals serving the nation's most vulnerable communities.

The FCRA Amendment Bill 2026, introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25, proposes granting a designated authority sweeping powers to manage or dispose of assets belonging to organizations whose FCRA registrations are cancelled or suspended. The All India Christian Council (AICC) has condemned the move as a direct threat to religious freedom and the survival of Christian institutions.

Dr. Joseph D'Souza, president of the AICC, called the situation "a dangerous and deeply alarming crisis" that threatens the very existence of institutions serving Dalits, tribals, and other marginalized communities across India.

This is a dangerous and deeply alarming crisis with immediate consequences for the most vulnerable populations in India.

The All India Catholic Union (AICU) has demanded the complete withdrawal of the bill, warning that it represents a direct assault on the constitutional protections guaranteed to religious minorities. The pattern of FCRA enforcement since 2014 has disproportionately targeted Christian organizations, with major groups including World Vision India, the Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), and the Evangelical Fellowship of India having their registrations cancelled in 2024.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin condemned the legislation as "a direct attack on Christian NGOs, Churches and other minority institutions." The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference in the United States has also called on India to withdraw the bill entirely.

The AICC alleges that the crackdown is being encouraged by the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), a Hindu nationalist organization with deep ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP party. The RSS, which has long equated Indian identity with Hindu identity, faces accusations of links to sectarian violence against Christians and other minorities.

Over 700 incidents targeting Christians were reported in India in 2025 alone, including violence, vandalism, and disruption of worship. International observers, including the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), have classified India's religious persecution as "particularly severe."

The AICC has called for comprehensive consultation with affected communities rather than what it describes as unilateral governmental decisions that threaten their survival.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let us be absolutely clear about what is happening. The Indian government is not "amending regulations." It is laying the legal groundwork to steal churches, hospitals, and schools that Christians built with their own hands to serve the poorest of the poor. Imagine if a Western nation passed a law to confiscate mosques and Islamic charities. The entire world would be on fire. But when it's Christians? Silence. The RSS and Modi's BJP are waging a slow, bureaucratic genocide against the Body of Christ in India. Seven hundred attacks in a single year, and the world yawns. Every church they seize, every orphanage they shutter, every hospital they close condemns real human beings to suffering. This is evil, and those who stay silent are complicit.
