Half of American Parents Never Pray With Their Children: New Bible Society Report Exposes a Generational Discipleship Gap

State of the Bible 2026 Survey of 2,649 Adults Reveals Only 14 Percent of Parents Read Scripture Daily With Their Kids as Practising Christians Buck the Trend

The American Bible Society has released its State of the Bible: USA 2026 report, and the findings are devastating. Less than a third of American parents pray with their children often or daily. Only 14 percent read Scripture daily or often with their kids. Fully 50 percent of parents rarely or never pray with their children.

The survey of 2,649 US adults conducted in January 2026 exposes a discipleship gap that threatens the next generation of American Christians.

How American Parents Are Failing the Discipleship Gap in 2026

God's Promise To Save Your Loved Ones – Obtaining God's Blessings

The breakdown is sobering. 16 percent of parents pray daily with their children, 13 percent often, 21 percent sometimes, 15 percent rarely, and 35 percent never. Bible reading is even more dire. 62 percent rarely or never read Scripture with their children.

Yet the picture among practising Christians is dramatically different. 72 percent of practising Christians pray with their children often or daily. 92 percent of practising Christian parents feel supported by their church. The gap reveals that the discipleship crisis is not primarily about secular hostility but about nominal Christians who outsource spiritual formation.

John Farquhar Plake, Chief Innovation Officer at the American Bible Society, summarised: "Most American parents are open to the Bible, but behavior hasn't kept pace with that openness."

The Crusader's Opinion

Half of American parents never pray with their children. Let that statistic sink in. The Bible cannot disciple the next generation if the parents do not open it. Practising Christians prove the alternative is possible: 72 percent pray with their kids often. The discipleship crisis is fixable, but only by parents who choose. Start tonight. One verse. One short prayer. One short conversation. The next great American revival will not be built at conferences. It will be built at kitchen tables.
