Vidalia City Schools Pull Sweet Onion Christian Learning Center Released Time After Director Pointed Out 20 Highest Paid Staff Earn $2.2 Million Combined
Vidalia City Schools in Vidalia, Georgia has terminated the Sweet Onion Christian Learning Center released time religious instruction programme after more than a decade of operation, apparently in retaliation for the programme director's Facebook posts criticising the district's spending.
Alliance Defending Freedom filed suit on 9 May 2026 on behalf of Sweet Onion's director Gady Youmans, alleging unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination and retaliation for protected speech.
Vidalia Georgia School District Cancels Christian Released Time Program Over Facebook Posts

The Sweet Onion programme provided voluntary off campus religious instruction with five classes counting toward high school graduation. On 12 September 2025, Youmans posted on Facebook criticising a proposed tax increase. He noted that "the BoE office keeps hiring admins we don't need with near $100,000 salaries" and pointed out that the district's 20 highest paid employees earned a combined $2.2 million.
In February 2026, Superintendent Sandy Reid informed Youmans the released time programme would end. Reid cited parent complaints about the Facebook posts and "concerns regarding course content reflecting particular Biblical interpretations." ADF argues the district has admitted, in its own justification, that it is firing a religious programme over speech. That is exactly the constitutional violation the First Amendment exists to prevent.
The Crusader's Opinion
A pastor in Georgia exercised his First Amendment right to point out that 20 school district administrators were collecting $2.2 million in combined salary while the district sought a tax increase. The district responded by cancelling a decade old Christian programme that had served students faithfully. The retaliation is so obvious that the district admitted it in its own explanation. ADF will likely win this case in federal court. Every Christian who runs a released time programme should know their rights and document every retaliation attempt. Speak truth. Document the response. Sue.
