Former Florida Baptist Pastor Jonathan Elwing Sentenced to Life in Prison for Child Sexual Abuse

Jonathan Edward Elwing, the former senior pastor of Palm View First Baptist Church in Palmetto, Florida, has been sentenced to 12 life sentences after a jury found him guilty of all charges related to the sexual abuse of children and possession of child sexual abuse material.

The verdict came on April 21, 2026, at the Manatee County Courthouse following a two day trial. The judge imposed three consecutive life sentences with nine additional concurrent life sentences. Elwing was immediately designated a sexual predator.

Elwing was first arrested in June 2024 after the Manatee County Sheriff's Internet Crimes Against Children division received a tip that the pastor had used cryptocurrency to purchase child pornography online. Detectives executed search warrants at both the church and Elwing's home on June 21, 2024, initially discovering four sexually explicit images of children on his cellphone.

Further forensic examination revealed far worse. Investigators found images showing Elwing sexually battering a child, along with 12 additional child sexual abuse material images. The Manatee County Sheriff's Office also discovered 10 covert cameras hidden at Elwing's home and inside his church office.

Elwing was convicted on 12 felony counts including sexual battery of a child under 12, lewd or lascivious molestation of a child under 12, five counts of using a child in sexual performance, and five counts of possession of child pornography.

Assistant State Attorney Ashley Dusnik praised the work of investigators following the sentencing.

Their efforts ensure that no children will be exposed to any additional harm at the hands of this defendant.

Church deacon Larry Bianchi expressed shock, noting that Elwing "seemed to be doing a good job" after replacing the church's previous pastor of 41 years. Palm View First Baptist Church is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

The Crusader's Opinion

There is a special place in Hell for men who hide behind the pulpit to prey on children. Jonathan Elwing did not just betray his congregation. He betrayed every child who trusted a man of God. He used the office meant to shepherd souls as a hunting ground for the most innocent among us. Twelve life sentences is justice served, but it does not undo the evil. The Church must be ruthless in rooting out predators. Zero tolerance. No cover ups. No quiet resignations. If you abuse a child, you will answer to the law and then you will answer to God.
