Gateway Church Founder Robert Morris Walks Free After Just Six Months Behind Bars for Child Sex Abuse
Robert Morris, the disgraced founder of Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, was released from Osage County Jail in Oklahoma on March 31, 2026, after serving just six months for sexually abusing a child beginning in the 1980s.
Morris, who built one of the largest megachurches in the United States with over 25,000 weekly attendees, walked out of the facility at 12:11 a.m. CDT. He had pleaded guilty in October 2025 to five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child as part of a plea agreement that gave him a 10 year suspended sentence with only the first six months served behind bars.
The abuse began on December 25, 1982, when victim Cindy Clemishire was just 12 years old. Morris was a traveling evangelist staying with her family in Hominy, Oklahoma, at the time. The abuse continued for approximately four and a half years.
Following his release, Morris issued a statement expressing remorse.
What I did to Cindy decades ago was wrong. There is no other word for it, and there is no excuse for it. I am deeply sorry. I ask again, publicly, and sincerely, for the forgiveness of Cindy and her entire family.
Clemishire, now 55, responded firmly to his statement.
I forgave Robert Morris many years ago...what happened to me on December 25, 1982, when I was 12 years old, was not a relationship it was a crime.
Morris was also ordered to pay $270,000 in restitution and must register as a sex offender. He faces a pending defamation lawsuit seeking over $1 million in damages. His attorney, William B. Mateja, continues to represent him in ongoing legal matters.
Megachurch Pastor Robert Morris Released From Oklahoma Jail After Guilty Plea for Child Abuse

Gateway Church, once ranked as the ninth largest Christian church in America, has been rocked by the scandal since allegations first surfaced publicly. Morris resigned from his position in 2024 after decades of leading the megachurch he founded in 2000.
The case has drawn widespread attention to the issue of accountability within megachurch leadership and the protection of vulnerable individuals in church settings.
The Crusader's Opinion
Six months. A man who spent four and a half years sexually abusing a 12 year old girl got six months in a county jail. Let that sink in. This is not justice. This is a mockery of it. Robert Morris stood before thousands every Sunday preaching about sin and repentance while harboring one of the most vile sins imaginable. He exploited the trust of a family, the innocence of a child, and the faith of an entire congregation.
The Church must be the safest place on earth for children, not a hunting ground for predators hiding behind pulpits. Every denomination, every congregation must demand zero tolerance. If we cannot protect the most vulnerable among us, we have failed the very mission Christ gave us. There is forgiveness through God, but earthly consequences must be real and severe. Six months is an insult to every survivor.
