Convert or No Burial: India's Hindu Nationalists Give Christians an Ultimatum Over Their Own Dead

Indian tribal Christians in Chhattisgarh are being denied burial rights for their dead unless they renounce their faith and convert back to Hinduism.

Indian Tribal Christians Forced to Renounce Faith Just to Bury Their Dead

In a deeply disturbing escalation of anti Christian hostility, tribal Christians in Chhattisgarh, India, are being told they must convert back to Hinduism if they want permission to bury their deceased loved ones.

The crisis came to a head on February 24, 2026, when 34 year old tribal Christian woman Sambai Mandavi died from respiratory and cardiac complications. Her husband, Kamlesh Mandavi, was blocked from burying her in the village's public cemetery or even on their own private family land in Amodi village, Kanker District.

Villagers, backed by Hindu nationalist groups including the Bajrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad, demanded the family undergo "Ghar Wapsi," a forced reconversion ceremony to Hinduism. Threats of physical assault, property destruction, and exhumation were issued if Christian burial rites were performed.

This is far from an isolated case. The United Christian Forum (UCF) documented 23 burial related incidents in 2025 alone, most concentrated in Chhattisgarh. Over 700 anti Christian violence incidents were recorded across India that same year, with 93% of perpetrators going unpunished.

This is not just about dignity in death; it's about whether tribal Christians belong.

John Dayal, UCF spokesperson, said at a February 19 press conference in New Delhi.

India's Supreme Court issued an interim order on February 18, 2026, halting all further exhumations of tribal Christian bodies. Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N.V. Anjaria directed the Chhattisgarh government to respond, but UCF spokesperson John Dayal noted that the state government's "calculated silence speaks volumes."

Bodies have been dug up and relocated without family consent, some after more than 20 years of burial. Families have been forced to transport remains over 50 kilometers to find alternative burial sites.

Attorney Tehmina Arora captured the cruelty of the situation plainly:

At the moment when a family is most vulnerable, they are told, 'This is not your place.'

India now ranks 12th on the Open Doors 2026 World Watch List for Christian persecution, up sharply from 31st in 2013. The RSS linked Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram continues to push for the removal of Christian tribal peoples from Scheduled Tribe status protections, which would strip them of vital legal and economic rights.

The Crusader's Opinion

Let me be absolutely clear about what is happening. Hindu nationalists are desecrating the graves of Christians. They are digging up bodies that have been in the ground for over 20 years. They are telling grieving widows that their dead wives and husbands cannot rest in peace unless the family renounces Christ.

This is evil. There is no other word for it. Imagine if Christians in the West told Hindus they could not cremate their dead unless they converted to Christianity. The international outrage would be deafening. But when it happens to Christians in India? Silence. From governments. From the media. From the so called human rights organizations that lecture everyone else.

The Indian government's silence is complicity. 93% of attackers face zero consequences. That is not a failure of law enforcement. That is policy.
