Compassion International Strategist Crystal Wilson: When Moms Thrive, the Church Thrives
Director of Global Fundraising Strategy Calls on Local Churches to Be the Single Most Important Source of Help for Struggling Mothers Worldwide
Compassion International's Crystal Wilson, Director of Global Fundraising Strategy, has issued a stirring Mother's Day challenge to local churches across the world: "Mothers thrive when a church shows up, and when mothers thrive, their children thrive."
Her central thesis is simple: motherhood, at every economic level, is harder than the world admits, and the local church must be the answer.
How the Local Church Must Show Up for Mothers in Every Community
"Every parental choice feels like a chance to be critiqued: breastfeeding, formula, daycare, private school, home education," Wilson writes. From burnout in affluent Western suburbs to severe malnutrition in the developing world, mothers carry burdens that no government programme can adequately meet. "The local church is the single most important source of help for moms, whether struggling with burnout or severe malnutrition," she argues.
Wilson illustrates the principle with a Dominican Republic case study from Compassion International's Nurturers programme, where local church support transformed maternal and infant outcomes in disadvantaged communities. She draws her theological framework from Acts 2, the picture of the early Church meeting needs through shared life. "When moms thrive, children thrive, and the church thrives."
The Crusader's Opinion
Government programmes fail mothers. Therapy apps fail mothers. Social media multiplies mothers' loneliness. Only the local church, the actual living body of believers in a particular place, can do what mothers need: cook a meal, hold the baby, drive the older child to school, pray over a sick toddler at 3 a.m. Crystal Wilson is right. Pastors, deacons, women's ministry leaders: visit the mothers in your church this week. Bring food. Bring help. Bring presence. The next great Christian revival will not be a stadium event. It will be a church that finally shows up.
