California Forced to Pay $4.5 Million After Hiding Kids' Gender Transitions From Parents
California has been ordered to pay $4.5 million in attorneys' fees after losing its legal fight to defend a state policy that allowed public schools to conceal students' gender identity transitions from their parents.
U.S. District Court Judge Roger Benitez of the Southern District of California issued the fee award on April 6, 2026, siding with the Thomas More Society, the legal group that represented California teachers and parents in the landmark Mirabelli v. Bonta case.
The case challenged a 2024 California law that prohibited school officials from informing parents when their children expressed gender dysphoria or began socially transitioning at school. Judge Benitez initially struck down the policy, a decision that was reversed by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
The U.S. Supreme Court then ruled 6 to 3 in March 2026 to allow Benitez's original decision to stand, permanently invalidating the California law and delivering what advocates called the most significant parental rights ruling in a generation.
If you trample constitutional rights of parents, you will pay for it literally. Peter Breen, Executive Vice President of the Thomas More Society
Thomas More Society Special Counsel Paul Jonna said the $4.5 million award reflects the enormous amount of work it took to overcome a state government that tried to cut parents out of decisions about their own children.
Federal Court Slams California For Cutting Parents Out Of Gender Identity Decisions

A 2023 report revealed that more than 1,000 U.S. school districts had adopted similar policies permitting teachers and staff to withhold gender identity information from parents without student consent.
President Donald Trump referenced the California policy directly during his State of the Union address, declaring that no state can be allowed to rip children from their parents' arms and transition them.
The Crusader's Opinion
California tried to turn teachers into secret agents working against Christian families. They built a system where the government decided a child's identity and the parents were the enemy. Thank God the Supreme Court stopped it. But make no mistake, this $4.5 million bill is being paid by California taxpayers, not the ideologues who passed this demonic law. They will try again. They always do. Parents are the God given guardians of their children, not the state. Any government that tries to steal that authority is at war with the family, and ultimately at war with God Himself.
