Black Megachurch Shocks Virginia: Alfred Street Baptist Donates 1 Million to Stop Eviction of 338 Families

Why Did Alfred Street Baptist Church Donate Over $1 Million to Save 338 Families From Eviction in Alexandria?
Alfred Street Baptist Church, a historically African American megachurch in Alexandria, Virginia, has donated more than $1 million to wipe out the rent debts of 338 families facing eviction from public housing.
The church raised $1,049,000 through its annual SEEK offering, an initiative tied to a season of fasting and prayer held earlier this year. The funds were directed toward the newly launched Fresh Start Initiative, a local effort designed to keep struggling families in their homes.
The Rev. Howard John Wesley announced the gift to his congregation on Easter Sunday. He told members that the church prayed God would not only change their lives but also change their land.
"It is my joy to share with you that after doing the audits and the ledgers and speaking with all the families and verifying debt, I want to let you know that with that SEEK offering, you have helped stop the eviction of 338 families to the cost of $1,049,000," Wesley said.
Wesley also publicly thanked God for what the church had done.
"I just wish somebody could give thanks to God for a black Baptist church that gave a million dollars to make certain that people did not lose their homes. To God be the glory; to God be the glory," he said.
How the Fresh Start Initiative Will Keep Alexandria Families in Public Housing
Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins recently highlighted the donation, which followed a report from the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority showing the agency had lost $1 million in unpaid rent across its public housing units. Officials cited rising costs of living and a difficult local job market as key reasons behind the shortfall.
"This is about more than clearing balances. It's about creating pathways to stability. Housing affordability continues to be one of the most pressing challenges facing our city," Gaskins said in a statement, according to ABC 7 News.
Gaskins added that the Interfaith Council is working to harness the moral leadership and generosity of local faith communities to prevent displacement while also investing in financial literacy and long term economic security for residents.
Founded in 1803, Alfred Street Baptist Church now has roughly 10,000 members and is widely known for periodically donating large sums to charitable causes. Last year, the church donated $132,469 to eliminate the college debt for 11 graduates of Saint Augustine's University in South Carolina.
The Crusader's Opinion
This is the Church doing what the Church is supposed to do. While politicians argue and bureaucrats shuffle paperwork, a black Baptist congregation in Virginia just kept 338 families under a roof with one offering. No press tour. No federal grant. Just sacrificial giving from believers who took Easter seriously. This is the Body of Christ in action, and it should shame every megachurch sitting on tens of millions in reserves while their neighbors get evicted. Imagine what the American Church could do if every congregation tithed like Alfred Street. The world is watching, and Christ is honored when His people open their hands.
