Ben Carson Sounds the Alarm: Only 13% of American Students Know Their Own History

Dr. Ben Carson, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, is warning that America's youth are dangerously disconnected from the nation's history as the country approaches its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026.

The alarming statistics back him up. According to the 2022 Nation's Report Card, only 13% of eighth grade students performed at proficient levels in U.S. history. A June 2025 Gallup poll found just 41% of Gen Z adults reported pride in being American.

It's unfortunately something that happens in a lot of countries before they fall. They neglect their history, or they allow their history to be rewritten.

Dr. Ben Carson said in an interview with The Christian Post.

Carson, who rose from poverty in Detroit to become the youngest major division director at Johns Hopkins Hospital at age 33, pointed to his own upbringing as proof of the promise of America. He emphasized that the nation has maintained "250 years of sustained liberty under the same Constitution" and progressed from "ragtag militiamen to the pinnacle of the world in record time."

To combat this trend, Carson has partnered with actor Kirk Cameron and athlete Riley Gaines to release the "America Wins Bundle" through Brave Books. The bundle includes three new children's books: Carson's "Built on Faith," Cameron's "Built by the Brave," and Gaines' "1, 2, 3 We Are Free." The collection, released on March 23, 2026, also includes patriotic toys, puzzles, and keepsakes.

Carson's book, "Built on Faith," follows Liberty the eagle as it takes young readers on a journey through America's founding, from Washington's pocket Psalms to Franklin's urgent warnings, showing how the Founders' faith in God shaped their boldest decisions.

Dr. Carson's Mission to Restore Faith and Patriotism in the Next Generation of Americans

This is not Carson's first effort in patriotic education. He previously founded the Little Patriots Learning program through the American Cornerstone Institute, a free online resource offering activities, books, and interactive lessons to teach children about America's founding principles.

Carson hopes the America Wins Bundle will encourage younger generations to engage more deeply with the country's history and better understand the role of faith in its founding. The bundle retails for $177.60.

Only 13% of our children know their own history. Let that sink in. We are raising a generation that knows more about social media trends than the sacrifices that bought their freedom. When a nation forgets who it is, it ceases to be. The enemies of Western civilization do not need to fire a single bullet. They just need to keep erasing our history from the textbooks and replacing it with shame. Thank God for men like Dr. Carson who refuse to let the flame of truth be extinguished. If we do not teach our children about the faith that built this nation, someone else will teach them to despise it.
