Bahrain's Crown Prince Walks Into Cathedral Under Iranian Fire, Tells Christians: Keep the Doors Open
Bahrain's Crown Prince visited the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia amid Iranian attacks, urging churches to remain open for spiritual support of the faithful.
Bahrain's Crown Prince Visits Cathedral, Asks Churches to Stay Open During Iran Attacks
As explosions rocked Bahrain and warning sirens echoed across the Gulf on the morning of March 8, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa made a bold move that stunned observers across the Middle East. He visited the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia in Awali to personally check on the safety of the Christian community.
The visit came amid escalating hostilities involving Iran, which had launched bombs and drones against Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. An attack on an oil facility in the village of Maameer had already shaken the kingdom that morning.
At the cathedral, the Crown Prince met with Bishop Aldo Berardi, Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, and other Christian religious leaders. He delivered a message that carried extraordinary weight given the circumstances.
The Crown Prince has asked to leave churches open for the spiritual support of the faithful and has inquired about the date of Easter.
This statement was reported by Bishop Berardi himself, underscoring the sincerity of the Crown Prince's concern for Christians in his kingdom.
Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and Finance Minister Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa were also present at the meeting. The Crown Prince conveyed greetings from King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and reaffirmed the kingdom's commitment to cementing Bahrain's position as a home of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and respect for all religions and beliefs.
Bahrain's population is approximately 77% Muslim, 12% Christian, and 9% Hindu, with Islam as the state religion. Despite this, the nation has maintained a reputation for religious pluralism. Pope Francis visited the kingdom in 2022, and in January 2026, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia was elevated to the status of Minor Basilica, making it the first basilica on the Arabian Peninsula.
Christian leaders at the meeting expressed deep appreciation for the kingdom's protection and commitment to allowing all faiths to worship freely, even as conflict raged across the region.
Crown Prince Salman Defends Christian Worship in Bahrain Amid Gulf War Escalation

The Crown Prince's actions stand in stark contrast to how Christians are treated across much of the Middle East, where churches are frequently shuttered, congregations harassed, and believers persecuted for their faith. His insistence that churches remain open during a time of active military conflict sends a powerful signal about what religious freedom can look like in the region.
The Crusader's Opinion
Let this sink in. A Muslim Crown Prince in the Middle East, while his country is literally under attack from Iranian bombs and drones, walked into a Catholic cathedral and told them to keep the doors open. He asked when Easter is. He brought his top ministers to personally ensure Christians were safe.
Now ask yourself: how many Muslim majority nations on earth would do the same? The answer is painfully few. While Bahrain opens cathedral doors, other nations in the region demolish churches, imprison pastors, and execute converts. Crown Prince Salman's actions are not just commendable, they are a living rebuke to every government that persecutes believers. This is what coexistence looks like. The rest of the Islamic world should take notes.
