Azerbaijan Just Bulldozed Christianity's Holiest Cathedrals: Cultural Genocide on Satellite Footage

Holy Mother of God Cathedral and Church of St. Jacob Demolished in Stepanakert as Armenian Christian Heritage Erased

Satellite imagery has confirmed what Christian Armenia has feared for two years. Azerbaijan has demolished the Holy Mother of God Cathedral, the principal Christian worship site in Stepanakert, and razed the historic Church of St. Jacob in what former US Commission on International Religious Freedom chair Nadine Maenza calls outright "cultural genocide."

The Holy Mother of God Cathedral, consecrated in 2019 after thirteen years of construction, was the spiritual heart of the Armenian Christian community in Nagorno-Karabakh. By early April 2026, it was rubble.

The Caucasus Muslims Board has confirmed the demolition was state planned, dismissing the structures as "illegally constructed." Azerbaijani parliament member Elnare Akimova brushed off international outrage as "a provocation by revanchist forces."

The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the spiritual seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church, accused Azerbaijan of deliberately targeting Armenian holy sites. Cross stones surrounding St. Jacob were pulverised. Since Azerbaijan captured the region in September 2023, 120,000 ethnic Armenians have fled, with 42,500 refugees arriving in a single month. Now their ancient churches are being erased so completely that future generations will not know they ever stood.

What Azerbaijan is doing to Armenia is what Islamic State did to Mosul. Demolish the church. Erase the cross. Pretend the Christians were never there. The West armed Azerbaijan, traded with Azerbaijan, and now watches Azerbaijan bulldoze the oldest Christian civilisation on earth. Armenia became Christian in 301 AD, before England, before America, before most of Europe. To stand silent now is to be complicit in the destruction of our own family tree. Sanction Baku. Defend the cross. Remember Stepanakert.
