Global Christianity Is Growing But Losing Ground Fast: What the 2026 Report Reveals

A sweeping new report from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary's Center for the Study of Global Christianity has laid bare the critical challenges facing the worldwide Church in 2026, even as the faith continues to expand in key regions.

The Status of Global Christianity 2026 report reveals that Christianity is growing at an annual rate of 0.95%, but Islam is outpacing it at 1.57%. The global Muslim population has now surpassed 2 billion and is projected to reach 3.4 billion by 2075.

Europe, once the heartland of Christendom, is in steep decline. The continent is home to roughly 553 million Christians, but that number is shrinking by 0.41% every year. North America tells a similar story, with 275 million Christians and an annual decline of 0.16%.

The Middle East paints an even more sobering picture. Christians now make up just 4.2% of the region's population, a dramatic fall from 12.7% in 1900 and 6.1% in 1970. The annual decline continues at 0.07%.

Researchers found that approximately 900,000 Christians died for their faith over the last decade, underscoring the severity of persecution facing believers around the world.

Rapid urbanisation presents both opportunity and crisis. Cities with populations exceeding one million have surged from just 20 in 1900 to 670 today. Over 60% of the world's major cities are now minority Christian, compared with only 25% a century ago.

The report also highlighted staggering financial losses within the Church. Churches and ministries now lose approximately $70 billion annually through theft, fraud, and ecclesiastical crime, up dramatically from $19 billion in the year 2000.

Perhaps most striking, approximately 2.3 billion people, roughly 27.7% of the global population, remain unreached by the Gospel. Less than 20% of non Christians personally know a Christian.

The global displacement crisis adds another layer of urgency. The current displacement rate stands at 450 per 100,000 people worldwide, affecting millions of believers who are forced from their homes by war, famine, and persecution.

Despite the challenges, the faith is surging in the Global South. Africa alone is home to nearly 780 million Christians, and roughly 70% of all Christian growth globally is now happening on the African continent. Evangelical and Pentecostal movements are expanding at rates of 1.47% and 1.25% respectively.

The Crusader's Opinion

The numbers do not lie. While Western churches debate pronouns and chase cultural relevance, the real Church is being built in the fires of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Nine hundred thousand martyrs in a decade should be front page news in every Christian nation on earth, but instead we hear silence. The West is not just losing its faith. It is choosing to abandon it. Meanwhile, $70 billion disappears into the pockets of thieves operating inside the house of God. Let that sink in. If the Church cannot protect its own flock and its own treasury, how will it stand against the forces arrayed against it? The answer is not hand wringing. It is repentance, reformation, and an uncompromising return to the Great Commission. The Global South understands this. The West needs to remember.
