WHO Declares Public Health Emergency After 246 Suspected Cases as Catholic and Protestant Hospitals Step Up Where State Authorities Cannot Reach
The World Health Organization has declared the latest Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo a public health emergency of international concern. As of 17 May 2026, the outbreak has produced 246 suspected cases and 80 confirmed deaths. Christian medical missions are functioning as the last organised health response across much of the affected region.
The strain is rare and deadly. Eastern DRC is already in the middle of one of the worst Christian persecution crises on earth thanks to the Islamic State affiliated Allied Democratic Forces.
How Christian Hospitals Are Holding Eastern DRC Together During the Ebola Outbreak
Catholic and Protestant medical networks have operated in eastern DRC for decades and are uniquely positioned to respond. Hospital chains, including those run by
Doctors Without Borders' faith based partners, mission hospitals, and Christian Health Association networks, are providing isolation wards, vaccination support, and community health worker mobilisation. They are doing this while ADF militants continue to massacre Christians across North Kivu and Ituri provinces.

The Christian medical workforce in eastern DRC has been thinned by attacks on hospitals, the killing of community health workers, and the displacement of over one million people since the latest M23 and ADF surges.
Yet the Christian Church remains, and her medical institutions continue to receive Ebola patients no one else will treat.
The Crusader's Opinion
Eastern DRC is one of the most dangerous places on earth to be a Christian, a doctor, or a child. The new Ebola outbreak adds 80 confirmed deaths to a region already drowning in Islamic State affiliated terrorism. The fact that Catholic and Protestant medical missions are still on the ground, treating patients, vaccinating villages, and risking infection themselves, is one of the great unsung witnesses of global Christianity in 2026. Pray for them. Fund them. Western governments must protect them. The Body of Christ in eastern DRC is bleeding on every front.
