Veteran Protestant missionary Benito Guevara Arcos, 79, has been missing in Guerrero State, southern Mexico for over six weeks. Confronted by armed men in San Vicente, Chilpancingo de los Bravos on 31 March 2026, he was forced into a vehicle and taken away. A criminal group later claimed he was released in Amojileca on 4 April. He has not been found.

A missing persons report was filed on 13 April. CSW's Director of Advocacy and Americas Team Leader Anna Lee Stangl has pressed Guerrero's National Search Commission to take the case seriously.

Mexican cartels routinely target evangelical pastors and missionaries because anti drug ministries, youth outreach, and addiction recovery programmes threaten their grip on local communities.

The pattern is stark. Between late 2023 and 2025, Mexico recorded the world's highest number of verified abductions and assaults against Christians, with 376 documented incidents. Guerrero is among the worst affected states. Christian ministry in cartel territory has become one of the deadliest callings in the Western Hemisphere.

Mexico is now the most dangerous country in the Western world to be a Christian missionary. 376 documented incidents in two years. Pastors abducted, beaten, and disappeared by cartel gunmen who fear no consequence. Benito Guevara Arcos has spent his life serving the people of Guerrero, and at 79 years old he has been swallowed by the same cartel violence the Mexican state cannot or will not confront. Pray for him. Pray for his family. Demand Western governments stop treating Mexico's church persecution as a footnote to the immigration debate. The blood of evangelical Mexico cries from the ground.
