75 Year Old Pro Life Grandmother Walks Free: Glasgow Court Throws Out Charges Against Rose Docherty
Scotland's First Buffer Zone Prosecution Collapses as Bishop Keenan Welcomes Vindication of Silent Pro Life Witness
A Glasgow court has dismissed all charges against Rose Docherty, 75, the first person ever criminally charged under Scotland's draconian abortion clinic buffer zone law. The grandmother had stood silently outside an abortion clinic holding a sign reading "Coercion is a crime, here to talk, only if you want."
Docherty was arrested in September for allegedly "influencing" persons within 200 metres of an abortion facility. The court ruled that her silent, peaceful presence broke no law.
Scotland Buffer Zone Law in Doubt After Pro Life Grandmother Acquitted
Bishop John Keenan, President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland, hailed the verdict: "The ruling is an important reminder that peaceful, consensual conversation in a public place is protected, and that criminal offences must be clearly and properly made out on the evidence."
The bishop said the case should "prompt a careful and thorough review of how 'safe access zone' powers are applied so that they do not infringe fundamental rights." Jeremiah Igunnubole, ADF International's barrister representing Docherty, called it "a significant victory for freedom of expression in the United Kingdom." Scotland's buffer zone law is now visibly cracking under the weight of its first prosecution.
The Crusader's Opinion
A 75 year old grandmother holding a peaceful sign in a public place. That is what the Scottish state criminalised. That is who Holyrood's politicians decided was a threat. They were defeated by a quiet woman with a Bible and a barrister. Rose Docherty's silence said more than a thousand activists shouting through megaphones. The buffer zone laws sweeping the West were always fascist in nature. They will fall the same way they rose. One court case at a time. One faithful grandmother at a time.
